The Workshop Initiative for Language Learning (WILL) provides a support program for intercultural communication education, entitled the Students Meet Internationally through Language Education (SMILE) project. In this program, Dialogbook, an essential ICT-based e-portfolio tool, is utilized to support participants’ activities. Since the project’s launch, Dialogbook has been updated several times to meet users’ needs. This paper introduces the functions of the latest version, released as open-source software, and discusses its potential application in similar educational programs.
As online education and intercultural exchange increasingly take place on digital platforms, objectively evaluating the quality of group communication has become a key challenge. Limited nonverbal cues and the need for instructors to monitor multiple groups make subjective assessment insufficient. This study proposes an end-to-end framework for quantifying online group communication quality using facial expression analysis. The system integrates computer vision with a feature-based re-identification architecture enabling robust identity tracking under conditions typical of online meetings, such as low frame rates, layout changes, and visual noise. Building on socio-psychological theories, communication quality is modeled along three dimensions: group emotional convergence, group affective valence, and group affective dynamics. Evaluation using real online meeting data from the SMILE project demonstrates that the proposed framework can suppress noise, capture collective emotional alignment, and distinguish different interaction phases. The results suggest the framework's potential as an objective and interpretable tool for supporting educational monitoring in online group communication.
This study investigates the impact of collaboration classes through the internet carried out amongst Thai and Japanese students under the Students Meet Internationally through Language Education (SMILE) project on a group of Thai high school students in a rural area. This study examines how online collaboration classes increased their confidence and self-evaluation of their own English abilities, cultural awareness, and skills with Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The duration of the program’s collaboration was three weeks; each week, two Thai students were assigned to meet online with the same two Japanese students to discuss different topics and exchange information with one another. The participants included twelve students from upper secondary schools in Thailand and Japan (i.e., N = 24). Data were collected from the Thai students via an online questionnaire and an interview after the course. Our data show that collaboration classes through the internet had strong positive effects on the students: They provided them with a genuine international environment in which to communicate in English, helping to raise their cultural awareness alongside other important points that should be cultivated in pre-secondary education. Most students were eager to join collaboration classes through the internet once again because they enjoyed utilizing their second language, English, as an authentic tool for communication. The overall project made a significant impact on the students, raising their confidence and enhancing their internal motivation.
The authors have conducted the Students Meet Internationally through the Language Education (SMILE) project since 2020. In the SMILE project, this study aimed to investigate how group meetings were conducted and how participants contributed to the conversations. Interesting features were identified by analyzing 39 transcriptions from the recorded videos of students’ online group sessions. This study reports the visualization methods and some results, including the relationships between the number of participants in one group and the Coefficient of Variation, which suggests a tendency for non-speaking participants to appear in larger groups. This implies that there is an appropriate number of participants for online intercultural meetings.
Numerous approaches to behavioral analytics based on access logs have recently been suggested. Recognizing the significance of behavioral log analytics (BLA) and gamification techniques, this study introduces a novel BLA technique utilizing interactive, nonlinear narratives. Twine, a widely used open-source tool for crafting interactive fiction, is also apt for BLA experiments. Consequently, we outline a methodology for incorporating features to capture user behavior while engaging with a nonlinear-story game by integrating JavaScript code snippets into Twine passages. Furthermore, the paper elucidates visualization techniques to comprehensively understand user behavior based on log data extracted from the game, offering an illustration through a case study of evacuation behavior simulation.
This paper describes a method for addressing smartphone addiction using Twine, an open-source tool for creating narrative games. Using a narrative game can effectively mitigate smartphone addiction because the target demographic is accustomed to playing games and can comprehend the solution through game playing. Solving problems in an engaging and enjoyable manner is crucial. In the game, the player assumes a role from morning until bedtime, making choices that reflect their typical smartphone usage. The game collects data on these behaviors, allowing us to identify strategies for reducing the time spent on smartphones.
With the advent of the Internet, our society has evolved into a place where personal information can be easily shared and collected. To explore people's attitudes towards this reality, we developed an interactive online game to analyze these
Here we describe a course centered on three international online collaboration classes. The participants were students at Japanese and Malaysian universities and the course used Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools to contribute to university students’ language ability, willingness to study, and knowledge about their own cultures and those of their interlocutors. Various communication tools were used to support and monitor the project. The use of these ICT tools, including a newly developed application program (Dialogbook), will be presented. We describe how Dialogbook was used to set up small-group discussions, exchange comments, provide feedback between the instructor and students, and enable students’ reviewing of their performance via rubric questions. The availability of such a one-stop support tool for students in the collaboration classes reduced the burden on teachers. The data collected with this application is closely examined both quantitatively and qualitatively, and the results show that the course successfully facilitated students’ engagement in the project, with high motivation levels.
This study examines the impressions that movie posters give people and analyzes movie poster trends. The primaryobjective was to determine whether movie posters have any characteristics, which was done through clustering usingarousal-valence maps.
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the demand for e-learning and video-on-demand services in education. Several methods of imparting education through on-demand videos exist based on the content and method of delivery. However, the most effective medium has not been identified conclusively. In this study, we explored the effectiveness of six different presentation patterns: the simple display of materials, materials-and-narration, use of animated avatars, use of realistic-humanoid avatars, and presentation in the metaverse (using standard computer monitors and head-mounted displays). Sixty subjects, ten males and ten females, from each of the young, middle-aged, and senior age groups participated in the experiment conducted in Dec. 2022. Each subject performed three different tasks, and subjective evaluations were conducted using questionnaires.
As the Internet has become prevalent, the popularity of net media has been growing, to a point that it has taken over conventional mass media. However, TWtrends, the Twitter trends visualization system operated by our research team since 2019, indicates that many topics on TV programs frequently appear on Twitter trendlines. This study investigates the relationship between Twitter and TV programs by collecting information on Twitter trends and TV programs simultaneously. Although this study provides a rough estimation of the volume of tweets that mention TV programs, the results show that several tweets mention TV programs at a constant rate, which tends to increase on the weekend. This tendency of TV-related tweets stems from the audience rating survey results. Considering the study outcome, and the fact that many TV programs introduce topics popular in social media, implies codependency between Internet media (social media) and mass media.

Recently, generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, has attracted significant attention from various industrial and academic fields; with this, ChatGPT has been predicted to replace programmers in several fields. However, in principle, ChatGPT is a machine that generates sentences similar to those of programmers and is unlikely to replace them. When an author published this in a blog post, it received significant attention. In this study, we recorded responses to the blog article and attempted simple text analyses. Specifically, after classifying the comments using sentiment analysis, co-occurrence network diagrams and word clouds were created for positive and negative comments, and their trends were evaluated.

Since 2016, the restroom-sign database (RSDB) has collected approximately 1,700 public restroom signs. Each record in the database has one or more photographs of the restroom signs, the actual location of the restroom, and a brief explanation of the item. A previous analysis of the collection revealed several tendencies and categories of restroom signs; the current study seeks to determine the degree of popularity of the various signs. Generally, public restroom signs indicate the location and gender segregation. However, the uniqueness of symbols affects their popularity in the context of social culture. Therefore, the study attempted to identify the most popular signs by creating a web application that compares signs randomly sampled from the database. The application was gamified to incentivize participation. This paper provides an overview of the application and tentative results of the analysis.
Recently, ethical considerations have become increasingly important in various situations. Human-centered design (HCD) activities are no exceptions. Because there have been no ethical guidelines for HCD-related activities in Japan, the human-centered design organization (HCD-Net) has published specific ethical guidelines for HCD activities. The guidelines provide general rules on ethical considerations for HCD specialists and ethical provisions for investigation, research, and deliverables. The guidelines have been published on the HCD-Net website. All researchers and practitioners engaged in HCD-related activities are expected to adhere to these guidelines when making ethical decisions.
With the increase in the various types of communication channels, communicating via online chatting has become common and is now considered an effective means of communication during real-time meetings. Various communication media, for example, traditional tools (such as Facebook Messengers, Twitter, Google Docs) or novel technologies (such as Slido and Miro), can be used as side channels; however, all these media remain separated from the main meeting. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an event program organizer containing a simple chatting function that can be used for questions and answers; this system has been named Event Program Organizer with a Question Answering System (EPOQAS). The system can be easily operated, and it has unique functions that enable the meeting participants to communicate with one another. Also, the source code of the system is published as an open-source software. Hence, implementing an instance of this system in research meetings will accelerate scientific discussions.
In Japan, many people are still not familiar with reading documents digitally, although digital books have been widely promoted recently. To disclose the obstacles preventing digital reading, a fundamental experiment investigating the difference in information-transmission efficiency between analog and digital media was performed. In this investigation, the participants were asked to read documents in two different forms, in a printed form (analog media) and a displayed form (digital media). In addition to the analog and digital comparison, the experiment analyzed another aspect: the differences among young, middle-aged, and senior generations. Herein, the results of the investigation and the implications of the experiment results were discussed.
In recent years, ethical considerations have become a primary concern across all fields of research. Human-Centered Design (HCD) is no exception. When the subjects of an experiment are human beings, rigid ethical consideration is required. User researchers must be careful about HCD-specific research ethics regardless of whether their work is carried out in laboratories or in industry. In view of this, the Human-Centered Design Organization (HCD-net) organized a particular working group (WG) to discuss the matter in early 2020. The group discusses three ethical concerns: (1) What ethical guidelines are necessary for specialists studying any HCD-related issues? (2) What ethical guidelines are necessary for HCD researchers conducting user research or user tests? (3) Should the HCD professionals have an ethical policy on their services or products? As a starting point for their discussion, the WG conducted a questionnaire asking about several ethical problems. This paper contains a summary of the comprehensive debate conducted in the WG and the results of the questionnaire, suggesting focal points for the WG to address in determining ethical guidelines for HCD activities.
