The text comprises a normative concern for the educational “borderland effect”. Within the hermeneutical circle, there are: (1) M. Bakhtin’s semiotics of culture and the idea of “borderland effect” as a developmental mechanism increasing the polyphonic dynamics and value of the Other; (2) an analogy to the “decentration” mechanism according to J. Piaget and J. Habermas and the idea of dialogue inspired by H.–G. Gadamer; (3) M. Buber’s idea of two types of faith and difficulties of ecumenism; (4) H. Hesse’s idea of spiritual awakening and inner transformation; (5) the types of adaptation to the complexity of interactions and the vision of identity as “the third value”, following D. Mostwin’s analysis of the Polish emigration in the USA; (6) difficulties with the borderland effect in creating Polish schools in Latvia in D. Urlińska’s experiment; (7) F. Znaniecki’s concern to eliminate intercultural antagonisms; (8) normative strategies towards tradition, freedom and change, as diversified attitudes towards differences and the “borderland effect”; (9) the coupling of interests of the disabled in integrated schools as a borderland problem; (10) the concept of the “borderland order” as a mechanism of sustainability and oscillation in dual integration with shifting the local dominants; (11) B. Skarga’s cultural attitude open to irony, withdrawing cultural persuasiveness. The “borderland effect” brings change of the cultural “meta-pattern” for education. The analyses conducted by M. Mead and F. Znaniecki imply the intercultural education open to differences between the young, against the pressure of antagonisms of the world of adult people.
On the “Associationist” Trap in Humanities. (Within the Marigin of False Claim by S. Galkowski in His Effort of “Logical” Exegesis of Znaniecki): In his introduction the author of this polemic indicates the phenomenon of reductio ad absurdum of Znaniecki’s conception in the exegesis of the addressee of this criticism. Next there is an outline sketched concerning the general perspective of disagreement against the approach by S. Gałkowski. There is also outlined criticism and appraisal towards Znaniecki by the author of this polemics. The text illustrates the trap of an epistemic reading as an ethical abuse of logics. Finally instead of a conclusion one is discussing the ways of treatement of the tradition of humanistic reflection and it warns against interpretative errors committed by the criticised author. The basic error is perceived as the result of domination of application of harmful associations of the leader blocking the way to deeper sense of the conception.
The article points to the original strategy of reading Stefan Szuman’s works, which has already been documented in monographic studies by the author of this text. Szuman’s classical achievement in the field of Polish psychology studies has been put into the context of the phenomenon of the „duality turn-over”, which came to theoretical maturity through the works of the „Great Generation” of the Polish pedagogues of the Interwar period, in which the author situates Szuman’s research involvements and his achievements. The paper recalls the chosen aspects, extracted from the psychologist’s works thanks to the above mentioned approach of the author. Both Szuman’s ingenious intuition and drive as well as the „epistemological obstacles” of the thought tradition in the psychology of his time – from the first decades of 20th century – are emphasised here.
The article, written in the form of an academic interpellation, addresses a series of tensions inherent in the attitudes adopted by humanists in defense against contradictions within the discipline, which often lead to the self-degradation of the humanities themselves. Such contradictions are usually resolved by resorting to one of the extreme attitudes that tear difficult cognitive complexities apart. Such practices are symptomatic of a variety of problems that need to be taken into account in university-level teaching and research; above all, however, their presence demonstrates that in the decades to come the discipline will need hightened receptiveness to such phenomena, based on authentic concern for the quality of the cultural rootedness of publications within the humanities – both within the historical and the present day canon of the discipline. The article also points to the pitfalls of the unilateralization of academic reflection and to the perils of reductionism – especially in the context of individual responsibility for the quality of contemporary reflection and for the formulas of reference to the tradition of the classics of thought. The author analyses a cross-section of phenomena testifying to the urgency of the problem of the self-degradation of the humanities in university practice, and thereby formulates the horizon of the postulated academic debate with the view to attaining a new quality of functioning of the humanities and social sciences as integrally related.
The article introduces the concept of “explosive ideas”, along with an emphasis on the diverse function of three types of “explosions” in the mode of meeting texts in culture. The author illustrates his practice of reading, lecturing, and writing books on the basis of five forms of “explosive effect”, inscribed in: (a) new meanings of well-known terms, destroying banality; (b) new terms as “screens”, revealing otherwise invisible phenomena; (3) eye-opening questions that encourage a change in perspective; (4) individual theses postulating paradoxicality, complexity, and new normativity of concepts; (5) sets of theses in the hermeneutic circle, constituting a well-established space for another being in culture. The text illustrates the phenomenon of explosiveness with examples of development impulses inscribed in the history of ideas and achievements of Nobel laureates in literature, treating the humanities as any self-reflection of culture, constituting an invisible symbolic soil for the development of spirituality. The explosiveness of an idea has three functions: (a) destroying naivety and appearances, experiencing a shock; (b) paving the way for accessing new meanings, opening the eyes with the effect of awakening; (c) stimulating internal transformation, rooting in life-giving spiritual impulses, decentrating our roots in world culture. Finally, the text reveals the idea of a “pandemic of thoughtlessness”. The article proposes a strategy for the educational treatment of culture, in which the affirmation of the “explosive” fragment coincides with the concern for the integral effect of influencing the rooting in the space of meanings. The author illustrates the explosiveness by citing many examples from the humanities as a diverse field of cultural self-reflection, taking into account literature, including poetry, and pointing to attempts to build theories as hypothetical representations of conceptual invariants of experience. The adopted strategy of reading belles lettres, history of philosophy, social disciplines, and ideas in the humanities is subordinated to the concern for the spiritual development of subsequent generations, inscribed in the symbolic heritage, and at the same time translates into pedagogical postulates.
M. Bachtina, Z. Baumana, E.H. Eriksona, J. Habermasa, H. Hesse'ego i innych. Stosuje w szczególności koncepcję „obrotu dualności” i przemian „metawzorców”. Tekst postuluje rewizję podejścia do tradycji humanistyki z troską o luki międzypokoleniowe w odczytywaniu i stosowaniu podstawowych pojęć, które należy traktować w sposób znacznie bardziej integralny i przekrojowy.
The text considers various aspects of pedagogical reflections within the problematics, described and analysed as follows: (1) The future speeds up and surprises, also painfully, (2) Everyday experience as an enemy of the future, (3) How symbolic culture is functionning?, (4) On the possibility of appraisal of classics beyond the classicism, (5) On bureaucratic interference into a lively textual tissue, (6) Between conservative and liberal treating of traditions in culture, (7) Between social radicality and dialogic deconstruction of culture, (8) Illusions and traps of canonizations of cultural contents, (9) The conclusion: on cultural attitudes in didactics. The author discusses limits and paradoxes of imposing cultural canon within education perceived as initiation into culture. The latter is to be perceived as invisible environment constituting symbolic soil for the memory of signifiers which serve for self-expression, understanding of the Other and for creative autotranscendence and enrichment of the cultural patrimony for the next generations. The basic message of the text requests more profound educational perception and treatement of tradition in order to make it participate in influences becoming the energetic and symbolic background of cultural development at the same time critically revisited in order to meet the challenges of the future.
The paper discusses meta-pedagogical transformational contexts in the space of human activities and fate, making use of hermeneutics, critical reflection, psychoanalysis, anthropology, and the "applied humanities" project. The basic approach is the hermeneutic practice per se. Problems at stake are: (1) moving of the dominant factors in professional processes and practices, such as: dialogue, rationality of actions, understanding of tradition, freedom, change, the ideal of the space of action; (2) transversal, structural duality and oscillations around action dilemmas and dominants in psychosocial development; (3) traps, limitations, and gaps of traditional approaches to the relationship between the factors in the transformation of a person's identity, misleading discontinuities and internal tensions; (4) an anti-positivist breakthrough in understanding the explanation of processes and the threefold "explosive effect' in the transformations of the emotional-cognitive representation of actors, including their self-transformation and interactive alliance in action; (5) other approaches to the indicated conceptualization.
Tekst omawia zawartość tomu: Représenter/transformer. Débats en analyse des activités, koord. Jean-Marie Barbier, Marc Durand, Paris 2018. Wątki rozważań: antropologiczne; teatralizacja, metaforyzacja, cielesność, niewidzialność, milczenie, gesty i przedmioty techniczne; poziomy i style, analogie i regularności w służbie transformacji, uwikłania w wiedzę i instalacje. Warianty upodmiotowienia.
W tekście metapedagogiczne konteksty transformacyjne w przestrzeniach działań i losów ludzkich omówiono z wykorzystaniem hermeneutyki, refleksji krytycznej, psychoanalizy, antropologii i projektu „humanistyki stosowanej”.
The text undertakes the problematics situated between modernity and tradition regarding the reception of H.A. Giroux’s works in Poland, in a view of furthering the study of pedagogy and educational praxis. First, the author outlines the beginnings of openness towards critical pedagogy. What is underscored here is the 1980s’ main inspiration drawn from the resistance paradigm. Then, the author proceeds to the current state of Giroux’s reception in Poland. He illustrates differences among particular examples and levels of the said reception of Giroux’s pedagogy and of the scholar’s theoretical background. The emphasized disputes pertain especially to transcending metaphysics and relativism as a challenge faced by hermeneutical criticism and critical hermeneutics. Additionally, the “critical” horizon of the main handbook of pedagogy used in Polish universities is discussed. The author point to the wasteful efforts at instigating the breakthrough in the reception of critical pedagogy and he exemplifies them by an instance of misbegotten analysis of the allegedly delayed critical pedagogy of work. As a particularly positive example the author presents a new effort at developing critical hermeneutics (and radical praxis) for pedagogy by Andrzej Wierciński. In the concluding part written “in lieuof conclusions,” four lists of critical problems’ dislocations are provided; the problems are both convergent and related to one another, thereby redefining current research objectives and pertain to practical applications in educational praxis.
I would like to offer some methodological and meta-narrative reflections concerning strategies when it comes to the treatment of the so-called critical or “radical” pedagogy, not only as an object of research, but also a perspective on Polish pedagogical understandings of our existence in the social and academic world, as well as in the public sphere and the educational domain. I undertake this review through the prism of changes from the last twenty five years, its current status, and from the angle of the direction of changes desirable for the future. I am guided by my experience in dealing with this thread of thought, or type of reflection since the beginning of the 1980s, as well as my recent attempt at grasping the comprehensive reception of critical pedagogy in the version related to my translations of Henry A. Giroux’s works, as well as works he co-authored, which were published in Poland, and my own analyses thereof2. I am pleased to be able to underline that the attempt at a balanced overview of the reception of critical pedagogy in the book, grouped by way of the foreword, the afterword and the annex, as the main protagonists of the reception, i.e. Professors Zbigniew Kwieciński, Tomasz Szkudlarek, Zbyszko Melosik, and Bogusław Śliwerski. All their voices are, without any doubt, worthy of being taken into account as the ones providing testimony to what the phenomenon of critical or radical pedagogy has become in Poland. I also wish to point out that the book contains an extensive chapter authored by myself entitled: O stanie recepcji amerykańskiej pedagogiki radykalnej w Polsce. Próba świadectwa osobistego i refleksji o „doświadczeniu pokoleniowym” [On the status of the reception of American radical pedagogy in Poland. An attempt at a personal testimony and reflection on “generational experience”], to which I wish to kindly refer you for details, development and documentation of the theses that I can only signal here.
The author of the article addresses the issue of understanding of the cultural authority in education. In the background of his considerations there are the insights of Paul Ricoeur, who revolutionized the methods of hermeneutic phenomenology, expanding them by creative reflections drawn from the field of mythology, biblical exegesis, psychoanalysis, theory of metaphor, and narrative theory. The article consists of seven parts, in which the author takes under the consideration the following issues, inspired by Ricoeur, and associated with the understanding of cultural authority: (1) The authority as an object of games with time; (2) Disapproval to the sociological reduction of authority in politics and theology; (3) The authority between the claim to be a possessor of truth, witness to the ongoing process of seeking the truth, and pathos of claim to be transmitter of truth; (4) The authority as a source of ontological debt of gratitude and obligation/commitment; (5) The authority and its disappearance in university education; (6) Authority in vertical and horizontal perspectives; (7) Return to the authority of the masterpieces of culture as a permanent and “distorted” return to oneself.
