ABSTRACT This paper revisits and extends the debate on the prosodic status of affixed words in Brazilian Portuguese within the Optimality Theory framework, especially based on Selkirk (1996) and Itô & Mester (2008)’s proposals, according to which violable universal constraints are responsible for mapping grammatical and prosodic structures at the expense of a possible disobedience to certain principles of the prosodic hierarchy. Starting from a review of the literature on the topic, we bring together ideas from our previous studies (Bisol, 2000, 2004, 2007; Schwindt, 2001, 2008, 2013) to argue that affixed words in Brazilian Portuguese are subject to three types of prosodization - composition, adjunction and incorporation - prefixes being subject to all three, while suffixes only to incorporation and composition, not to adjunction. In contrast, clitics are characterized as structures labeled as attached to their hosts. The evidence comes especially from the diagnostics of stress assignment, but also from other word domain processes. Based on this description, we problematize some consequences of this typology for the organization of the prosodic hierarchy and its effects on morphological transparency by defending a continuum that goes from composite to incorporated structures.
This study focuses on words formed with -ario, -eria, -eiro, appeciating them from the perspective of the relationship with the past with an emphasis on their modalities in the present. Diachrony is called to explain certain facts related to origin and etymology. The relationship between the three forms is analyzeded from the perspective of a synchronous model. Two suffixes result from the presented trio: -ario and -eiro; -ario/a with the substitute -eria in certain cases. Derivation, synchronic by nature, is one of the focuses. It comprises two levels, lexical in which the modalities of these suffixes are developed and the post-lexical in which they can constitute a derivation that opens the doors to the suppletive. The significance is analyzed through the binomial meaning and sense: meaning can involve an entire paradigm; sense, one word, source of its own proficiency.
The roundtable Phonology, moderated by José Magalhães (UFU) and organized in honor of Professor Leda Bisol, presents an overview of studies on Phonology from different theoretical perspectives. Carmen Matzenauer (UFPEL) introduces Classical Generative Phonology, based on concepts such as levels of representation, rules and features, and its subsequent developments. Luciani Tenani (UNESP – São José do Rio Preto) presents the premises of Prosodic Phonology – a theory that organizes the speech continuum into hierarchical prosodic constituents. Christina Abreu Gomes (UFRJ) deals with Usage-based Phonology and the Exemplar Model, which predicts emerging abstractions from the use and linguistic experience of speakers.
In this chapter, we discuss the processes of Vowel Neutralization (VNeu), Mid‐Vowel Harmony (MVH), and Vowel Nasalization (VNas). Of these processes, VNeu and VNas are active in the vowel systems of both European (EP) and Brazilian (BP) Portuguese, whereas MVH is only found in BP. We will propose a rule‐based analysis of these processes, modeled in the framework of Feature Geometry. VNeu in Portuguese may affect both unstressed and stressed mid‐vowels. Although our focus will be on Unstressed Vowel Neutralization (UVNeu), Stressed Mid‐Vowel neutralization will be briefly discussed also. We will analyze unstressed as well as stressed VNeu in both varieties as a mechanism of feature deletion followed by respecification with the unmarked features. Particularly with regard to UVNeu we show that in BP contrastive aperture features are progressively deleted, whereas in EP the set of neutralizable segments are merged in a single operation. MVH is a variable rule of all regional variants of BP. It applies in the part of the word that precedes the main stress and only affects mid‐vowels. In contemporary EP, this process is inoperative. EP and BP possess a set of contrastive nasal vowels and nasal diphthongs. The ongoing debate among phonologists is whether the oral vs. nasal contrast in vowels and diphthongs is phonological or phonetic. We will follow here the mainstream analysis for BP and EP nasal vowels, which derives these sounds from an underlying /VN/ sequence. For the nasal diphthongs, we will propose a representation in which the nasal feature is associated with the syllable rhyme.

■ ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the underlying distribution and inventory of theme vowels in the Portuguese noun class. Since it deals with the underlying distribution of theme vowels in both word constitution and derivation, the study not only considers the possibility of attaching suffixes to roots or to stems but also adopts the “stem-driven derivation”, admitting that the stem is stored in the permanent lexicon. Therefore, the theme vowel is in the basis of the derivation process of the nouns in the language since its subjacency. The observation of Portuguese grammar phenomena has shown that three types of criteria support this position: morphophonological, morphological and semantic ones. Regarding the inventory of nominal theme vowels in Portuguese, the study recognizes the singular behavior, in the nouns of the language, of final unstressed vowel /e/, by comparison with vowels /o, a/. Vowel /e/ plays two roles; it is an epenthetic vowel and, in a restricted way, a theme vowel with no correlation with the gender, whereas vowels /o, a/ are always theme vowels and agree with the gender of the words1.
