PurposeThis study aims to examine how the readability of bylaws relates to the financial performance of Brazilian financial cooperatives. It investigates whether linguistic complexity functions as a mechanism of opacity, particularly in lower-performing institutions, as proposed by the management obfuscation hypothesis (MOH).Design/methodology/approachReadability is measured using file size, page count and the Fog Index (FOG). Financial performance is assessed via return on equity (ROE) and return on assets (ROA), using 2,427 cooperative-year observations from 2016 to 2022. The empirical strategy includes pooled ordinary least squares, two-stage least squares, quantile regression and propensity score matching (PSM).FindingsResults partially support the MOH. File size and page count show a negative association with performance, especially in weaker cooperatives, though not consistently in PSM models. The FOG is positively associated with ROE, suggesting syntactic complexity may reflect legal formality rather than opacity. Effects vary across readability measures and performance levels.Research limitations/implicationsThe readability measures focus on surface-level textual features and may not fully capture semantic or interpretive complexity. The study also does not evaluate how members engage with these documents in practice.Practical implicationsShortening and simplifying bylaws may improve transparency and oversight, particularly in low-performing cooperatives. However, syntactic complexity can reflect legal or institutional maturity and should not be interpreted solely as obfuscation.Social implicationsClearer bylaws support democratic governance and financial inclusion, particularly in underserved regions. Enhancing accessibility can foster participation, accountability and trust in cooperative institutions.Originality/valueThis study offers a novel dataset and methodologically diverse analysis, contributing to governance and disclosure research in non-English, emerging market contexts.
Financial cooperatives play an important role in promoting financial inclusion and community development. This study investigates how board characteristics, including size, gender diversity, and tenure, influence the financial performance of 930 Brazilian financial cooperatives between 2008 and 2022. Using panel data and the System Generalized Method of Moments (SYS-GMM), the results reveal that larger boards negatively affect performance due to coordination inefficiencies, while longer tenure on supervisory boards enhances stability and oversight. Female representation on the board of directors shows a significant negative association with financial performance, reflecting potential cultural and institutional challenges in governance. Cooperative size positively affects performance, reflecting economies of scale, while leverage and network affiliations pose financial challenges. The findings highlight the importance of designing governance structures that balance inclusivity, representation, and financial sustainability, providing insights for improving governance in cooperatives operating in emerging markets.
PurposeThis paper aims to examine whether gender diversity in boards of directors (BOD) and executive teams (ET) relates to financial performance in Brazilian financial cooperatives, and whether BOD and ET tenure moderates this link. Set in a large emerging economy aligning with global governance standards on gender representation, this study highlights how women’s leadership supports efficiency and accountability. Design/methodology/approachThis study is conducted on a panel of 1,204 cooperatives (2008–2022). Diversity is measured by Blau index and percentage of women. Models are estimated using two-stage least squares (2SLS) with lagged and regional instruments and time effects. FindingsGender diversity in BOD and ET is positively associated with return on assets, with no robust effect for return on equity. Board tenure positively moderates the diversity–performance relationship for both outcomes, whereas executive tenure does not. The moderation is economically meaningful, indicating experience conditions the realization of diversity gains. Research limitations/implicationsFindings are limited to Brazilian financial cooperatives and two accounting-based indicators. Conceptually, the results sharpen governance theory in member-owned institutions by showing that diversity’s performance effects are layer specific and contingent on experience. Practical implicationsBalanced board tenure amplifies performance gains from gender diversity. Organizations and regulators should manage renewal to maintain balanced tenure and disclose tenure distributions to realize efficiency gains. Social implicationsExpanding women’s leadership in cooperatives, especially in underserved regions, supports financial inclusion, ethical conduct and local development, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5. Originality/valueThe authors use longitudinal regulatory microdata from the Central Bank of Brazil on credit cooperatives; 2SLS addresses endogeneity and shows how multilayer gender diverse leadership relates to performance.
Purpose: This study analyzes how the different stages of the life cycle influence accounting conservatism in Brazilian credit unions, filling a research gap regarding the relationship between organizational maturity and financial reporting quality in non-profit entities. Methodology: The research employed panel data regression modeling for a sample of 615 Brazilian credit unions from 2017 to 2023. The cooperatives were grouped into life cycle clusters based on the models of Vasylieva and Chmutova (2015) and Maia (2022). Accounting conservatism was measured using the models of Ball and Shivakumar (2005) and Beatty and Liao (2011). Results: The panel model results demonstrate that life cycle stages have explanatory power over the accounting conservatism of Brazilian credit unions, confirming the proposed hypothesis. Study Contributions: The research extends the application of life cycle theory to the credit union sector, demonstrating that accounting conservatism varies across stages. This provides novel evidence for the Brazilian context and emerging markets.

The objective of the study is to analyze whether credit unions manage their accounting results, in order to smooth them through provision for bad debts (income smoothing), from a default perspective. The sample reaches 938 unique cooperatives between the period from December 2010 to December 2018, with data from the Central Bank of Brazil, tested using the multiple regression statistical technique, in quarterly panels. The variation in the stock of credit operations and the adjusted net income were not statistically significant in the model, however it was not possible to accept the hypothesis that credit unions use the allowance for loan losses (PCLD) as a mechanism for managing results. The interest rate implicit in the result of income from credit operations was significant, and therefore related to the PCLD variation, while the condition of free admission did not show statistical significance. The variation in default was significant in the model, with a negative coefficient, implying consistency with the earnings management hypothesis, since in a scenario of higher default (risk) the relationship is negative and, therefore, PCLD levels are lower, avoiding potential negative results. The results indicate the absence of earnings management by PCLD in the sample and period, contributing to the discussion of the relationships between earnings management variables. This enables credit unions to reflect on their internal corporate governance structure. In addition, the evidence contributes to the progress of the literature on earnings manipulation in credit unions, for which there are few studies available and play an important role in the Brazilian market, ensuring funding flows to economic sectors not served by traditional banking institutions.
The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe is driven by the European Union’s Fit for 55 package, introduced in 2021. This study focuses on analyzing the behavior of active and potential EV Consumers in Germany in 2021 through 2023, addressing stress related to continuity, acquisition, battery recharging, and maintenance of EVs. Using Google Trends data, the study assesses how EU policies and the introduction of e-fuels influence mobility and contribute to a sustainable transportation future in Germany. Results indicate that during the week of the Fit for 55 announcement, there was a strong trend of continuity in EV use by active customers. On the other hand, potential customers showed a tendency to acquire EVs despite an exception that allows the sale of internal combustion vehicles that use e-fuels. However, the stress level was high in both groups, warranting further observations. Future studies should include statistical analyses of sales in the German automotive market, combined with analyses of the trends found here.
Purpose-This study investigates the effects of smart technologies in urban management on the economic and social dimensions of Brazilian Smart Cities, with a focus on fiscal governance, health, and work. Smart Cities are defined as those that integrate systems, processes, and services through enabling and inclusive technologies that benefit the community. Design/methodology/approach-Grounded in Smart City literature, this empirical study examines the influence of smart technologies on health and work indicators, mediated by fiscal governance. Secondary data from 93 Brazilian Smart Cities were analyzed using structural equation modeling, incorporating mediating effects. Findings-The results indicate that smart technologies positively influence work indicators but do not directly affect health indicators. A positive relationship with health indicators emerges only when mediated by fiscal governance, underscoring the limitations of merely providing technology in Smart Cities. Social implications-Cities with stronger fiscal capacity are better equipped to invest in the tools, personnel, and infrastructure necessary for the effective implementation of health technologies. These findings can help policymakers allocate resources more strategically to benefit the population. Originality/value-This study provides empirical evidence on key social components that must be developed for a Smart City to truly serve its citizens. It demonstrates that technology alone has limited impact, but when combined with effective public policy, it can significantly enhance critical indicators such as public health.
Objective: Credit cooperatives face competition not only from traditional banking institutions but also from emerging players like fintech’s. As a result, it becomes imperative for credit cooperatives to actively monitor their performance to stay competitive in the market. Given the economic significance of these entities, the study aims to explore the impact of the characteristics of statutory bodies on the economic performance of Brazilian credit cooperatives. Methodology: Using panel data on 973 cooperatives over 2005-2022, we employed panel tests and the generalized method of moments (GMM) to address endogeneity, assessing how board size, gender diversity, and tenure of the board of directors, executive management, and supervisory board relate to performance. It was not possible to strongly support that those variables influence performance. Nevertheless, our models underscore the importance of accounting for both the dynamic relationship between variables and time-invariant unobservable heterogeneity in the analysis. Results: The findings highlight the importance of tailored board composition and developing female leadership pipelines to balance member representation and financial oversight as cooperatives evolve. Monitoring board structure is key for these entities to remain competitive while upholding their social mission. Contributions: This study is pioneering in investigated the influence of statutory bodies in performance of Brazilian credit cooperatives, given the difficulty in obtaining the dataset, which is not publicly available.
Purpose: This research aims to analyze whether credit unions manage their accounting results in order to smooth them through the provision for doubtful accounts (income smoothing), from a default perspective. Methodology: The sample reaches 938 unique cooperatives considering the period from December 2010 to December 2018, with data from the Central Bank of Brazil, tested using the multiple regression statistical technique, in quarterly panels. Results: The variation in the stock of credit operations and the adjusted net income were not statistically significant in the model, however it was not possible to accept the hypothesis that credit unions use the allowance for loan losses (PCLD) as a mechanism for managing results. Contributions of the Study: The results indicate the absence of earnings management by PCLD in the sample and period, contributing to the discussion of the relationships between earnings management variables.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the relationships between cultural orientation and normative knowledge, in a direct and moderate way, on the whistleblowing intentions of accountants from Hispanic American countries. Design/methodology/approach This study used responses from a sample of 410 accountants, preparers and auditors of financial statements from Hispanic American countries. Descriptive statistics, nonparametric tests and structural equations with partial least squares algorithm were applied for data analysis. Findings The results emphasized the cultural positioning of horizontality, in which an individual perceives themselves as equals to their colleagues, allowing discussions on various aspects of individual behavior. The knowledge variable is proved to be important in explaining the intention to report and can also moderate the influence of cultural variables on intentions. Practical implications These findings contribute to the literature by offering a clearer definition the normative knowledge variable, and to organizations, which can explore the research’s evidence to improve their training and qualification programs, thereby generating significant knowledge for their employees. Originality/value Whistleblowing is the main tool for identifying organizational frauds, but it is differently perceived in several cultural contexts. The results demonstrated the ethical cultural positioning of these Hispanic American professionals in relation to cultural aspects of other countries. Some studies highlight knowledge as a relevant factor in the organizational environment, but this study innovates by testing and demonstrating its impact on whistleblowing and culture.
