Aphids and crane flies in amber purported to have originated in China were examined. Six aphid specimens were characterised and determined to be conspecific with Germaraphis defuncta Heie, originally described from Baltic amber. Two crane flies from the same collection were identified as Cheilotrichia minuta and Rhabdomastix brevis, species also previously described from Baltic amber. This study shows that when the locality of an amber source is ambiguous, fossils can be used to determine the true province.
A new aphid species,Dracaphis angustata, has been found in China from the Middle Triassic. It is especially informative because its whole body is preserved except for the distal part of the antennae and part of the legs. Only wings of three other aphid species of Triassic age have previously been found:Triassoaphis cubitus, described by Evans (1956) from Australia and placed in its own family, Triassoaphididae Heie, 1999;Creaphis theodora, described by Shcherbakov and Wegierek (1991) from Central Asia and placed in its own family, Creaphididae; andCoccavus supercubitus, described by Shcherbakov (2007) from Kyrgyzstan and placed in Naibiidae together withNaibiafrom the Lower Tertiary. The new species described below must be placed in its own family Dracaphididae because it possesses a combination of characters unknown in any other aphid clade.
A list of eleven aphid species collected in the "Norte Chico" area in northern Chile is given. Aphis dunielue Remaudiere, Eucarazzia elegans{Ferrm) andHystenmeura setariae (Thomas) are new records to Chile. In the collections seven species are agriculturally important pests introduced from the Northern hemisphere and only two are native to South AmericafA. danielaeand Uroleucon m«cv;/ai(Blanchard)), in accordance with previous experiences ofa peor endemic aphid fauna in the Southern hemisphere. This could be explained by Heie's hypothesis based on palaeontological data.
AbstractTwo different species of Tinocallis were previously confused under the name T. saltans (Nevsky). The status of the true T. saltans is established by designation of a lectotype from the Nevsky syntype series. The alate vivipara, embryo, alatoid nymph, male, and ovipara of T. nevskyi sp. nov. are described and compared with T. saltans. The new aphid is known from Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and it recently appeared in Europe. A new synonymy is established: T. yinchuanensis Zhang, 1980 = T. saltans (Nevsky, 1929).
Twenty aphid species are recorded from Kenya and Tanzania. Eonaphis crotonis Quednau is new to East Africa; Aphis fabae subsp. solanella Theob. and Macrosiphum rosae L. are new to Tanzania. New host-plant records are added to some of the species. The male of Neophyllaphis grobleri Eastop is descriptionbed for the first time and measurements of other morphs of this species and of the little known Eonaphis crotonis, previously found only once, are given.
