Background: Chiari-like malformation (CM) and syringomyelia (SM) are common neurological disorders in Pomeranian dogs. The familial aggregation of these disorders has not been thoroughly characterised in this breed. Methods: A cohort of 999 Pomeranians examined with MRI for CM/SM was retrospectively reviewed. Siblings within litters were identified and compared, and the familial aggregation between offspring and parents screened for these conditions was investigated. Results: The mean central canal dilation (CCD) increased statistically significantly with the age of the dog at the time of the MRI scan. Forty-three per cent of all the dogs were free of CM, with 57% had CM. SM was detected in 31% of all the dogs, while 69% were not affected. Only 37% of all the dogs were free of both conditions. SM was observed in 6% of all the dogs without being affected by CM. Thirty-nine litters were identified in which two or more siblings were scanned. Siblings within the same litter had comparable scans in almost all the cases. Although pups from affected parents have a higher risk of SM, and pups bred from unaffected parents have a lower incidence of SM, the statistical significance could only be demonstrated for the >3 years of age category of SM in offspring, compared with the presence of SM in the mother. It could not be demonstrated for CM. Conclusions: Both CM and SM are frequently observed in this breed, and SM tends to progress over time. Siblings often show comparable findings. The screening results obtained from mothers aged >3 years indicated that SM-affected mothers are more likely to have affected offspring. CM/SM are most likely heritable traits in this breed, and to reduce the frequency of affected pups, breeders are encouraged to screen their breeding stock and use only unaffected parents.
Gastric cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally in humans and remains a clinical challenge with limited treatment options and poor survival. Dogs develop spontaneous gastric cancer that parallels the clinical presentation and histology of human disease, supporting their value as a comparative oncology model. Here we present a comprehensive transcriptomic characterization of canine gastric cancer through single-nucleus RNA-sequencing, bulk RNA-sequencing, and Visium HD 3′ spatial transcriptomics of treatment-naive tumor and normal stomach tissues from Belgian Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdogs. Across 107,085 nuclei, we identified 44 distinct cell populations, including tumor-enriched states as well as profound depletion of the normal parietal and chief cell gastric lineages. Cell-cell communication analysis revealed enhanced epithelial-fibroblast crosstalk driving epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Bulk RNA-sequencing further identified enrichment of signaling pathways implicated in H. pylori associated human gastric carcinogenesis, including Hippo, PI3K-Akt, and Wnt. Notably, we observed cell-type-specific altered expression of KLHL29 , PDZRN3 , and PLAU , which are among our previously identified canine gastric cancer susceptibility genes, linking germline risk to specific tumor cellular contexts. These data establish the first transcriptomic atlas of canine gastric cancer and demonstrate substantial molecular homology between canine and human disease.
IntroductionCanine epilepsy is a common and complex neurological disease that occurs in almost all dogs. In the Netherlands, there are nine pedigree dog breeds, and all of them have numerous small populations, with moderate to high inbreeding coefficients. The goal of this study is to characterise epilepsy within these breeds and to estimate the prevalence for each of these nine breeds: Dutch Partridge dog, three variants of the Dutch Shepherd, Dutch Smoushound, Kooiker dog, Markiesje dog, Saarloos Wolfdog, Schapendoes dog, Stabyhoun, and Wetterhoun.MethodAn online questionnaire was distributed to establish the phenotypic characterisation of idiopathic epilepsy (IE) and epilepsy of unknown cause (EUC). The prevalence was estimated using data from breeders’ associations, as well as cases seen by the investigators but unknown to the breed clubs.ResultsThe estimated prevalence of IE and EUC was for the Dutch Partridge dog 2.63%, short haired Dutch Shepherd 0.72%, rough haired Dutch Shepherd 1.21%, long haired Dutch Shepherd 0.42%, the Dutch Smoushound 2.22%, Kooiker dog 0.4%, Markiesje dog 0.84%, Saarloos Wolfdog 1.9%, Schapendoes dog 0.23%, Stabyhoun 1.5%, and Wetterhoun 2.8%. All breed clubs use breeding advice to reduce the frequency of IE/EUC, and within the Dutch Shepherd shorthaired, Kooiker dog, Smoushound, and Saarloos Wolfdog, the frequency has dropped over the years. Within all breeds, generalised tonic–clonic seizures (GTCS) were the most frequently observed type of seizures next to cluster seizures (CS) and status epilepticus (SE). Roughly, pre-ictal and post-ictal signs could be observed in half of all epileptic dogs. Anti-seizure medication (ASM) was administered to 78% of the dogs, and 70% of those experienced side effects. Only in the Wetterhoun was the need for an anti-seizure medication (ASM) less. Less than 50% of the Wetterhouns needed an ASM. The most common ASM across all breeds was phenobarbital (PB).ConclusionPrevalence varied across the nine breeds, regardless of their population size. The phenotypic characteristics of IE/EUC are comparable with those of other dog breeds. Breeding strategy appeared to be the most effective in the Dutch Smoushound and Kooiker dog.
Introduction Volumetric studies in relation to CM/SM have not been reported in Pomeranians. In this study, we aim to (1) report the intermodality agreement between CT- and MRI-based volumetric measurements of the skull and cervical spinal canal, and (2) assess for differences and associations between the volumetric measurements and CM/SM status.Methods Pomeranians were included that underwent CT and MRI studies during the period of February 2022-June 2024. Frontal sinus volume (FSV), caudal cranial fossa volume (CCFV), rostral and middle cranial fossa volume (RMCFV), caudal cranial fossa parenchymal volume (CCFPV), rostral and middle cranial fossa parenchymal volume (RMCFPV), cerebellar parenchymal volume (CPV), brain stem parenchymal volume (BSPV), ventricular system volume (VSV), and spinal canal volume between C1-C7 (CSCV) were measured. CCFV to RMCFV volume index (VI) and CCFPV to CCFV (CCFPV%) were calculated. Agreement between MRI- and CT-based quantitative measurements was assessed with intraclass correlation coefficients. Inferential statistical tests including logistic regression modeling were performed to assess for associations between variables and CM/SM status.Results For all volumetric assessments that were performed on both CT and MRI, agreement was good or excellent. There were significant differences between SM normal and abnormal dogs for body weight as well as all volumetric parameters except for CCFPV% and RMCFV. Multiple logistic regression showed that a smaller CCFV and larger VSV were associated with SM.Conclusion Smaller CCFV and larger VSV are associated with the development of SM in Pomeranians and have increased odds of SM.
Recently we characterized polymyositis in the Dutch Kooiker dog. The familial occurrence of the disease were suggestive of an inherited cause. Here we report the results of our molecular genetic investigation. A genome-wide association study of 33 cases and 106 controls indicated the involvement of a region on chromosome CFA19 (p = 4.7*10-10). Haplotype analysis indicated that the cases shared a 2.9 Mb region in the homozygous or the heterozygous state. Next Generation Sequencing of genomic DNA implicated a deletion of a 39 kb DNA fragment, located 10 kb upstream of the neighbouring interleukin genes IL21 and IL2. The frequency of the deletion allele was 0.81 in the available cases and 0.25 in a random sample of the Kooiker dog breed. Leukocytes of affected, untreated dogs that were homozygous for the deletion overexpress IL21 and IL2 upon stimulation with mitogens. We suggest that elements located 10-49 kb upstream of the IL21/IL2 locus play an important role in the regulation of the canine genes and that deletion of these elements is a risk factor for polymyositis in Kooiker dogs. Postulating causality, the penetrance of the disease phenotype was estimated at 10-20% for homozygous dogs and 0.5-2% for dogs that were heterozygous for the deletion. Our results suggest that distant variants upstream of IL21 could also be important for human autoimmune diseases that have been found to be associated with the IL21/IL2 chromosome region.
Background: Gastric carcinoma in the Tervueren and Groenendael varieties of the Belgian Shepherd dog is commonly recognized and carries a grave prognosis. Information on incidence and heritability is necessary to design an effective selection strategy against this disease. Methods: A database of cases and controls was built including cases with Tier 1 (confirmed via endoscopy or post-mortem) and Tier 2 evidence of gastric carcinoma. From the database, a birth cohort of dogs born in the Netherlands in the period 2000–2010 was used, together with pedigree information to calculate heritability using a mixed models approach. Univariate linear regression was used to test the influence of the gastric carcinoma status of the parents on gastric carcinoma occurrence in offspring. Results: For Tervueren the 10-year cumulative incidence was 4.7%, and for the Groenendael this was 2.1%. There was no sex predilection. The odds of gastric carcinoma were 5.0 (2.4–11.0) in offspring where at least one parent was known to be affected versus at least one parent was known to be unaffected. Heritability, based on analysis using pedigree information from 338 dogs with gastric carcinoma and 159 controls, was 0.53 (SE 0.15). Conclusions: Gastric carcinoma in the Belgian Shepherd Tervueren and Groenendael varieties has a high incidence in the Dutch population and a strong genetic component. Because it is a late onset disease, dogs have often already been used for breeding before they are diagnosed. An effective breeding strategy for reducing disease incidence therefore relies on the identification of genetic risk factors influencing its development.
Background: Currently, there are no diagnostic imaging-based studies that have focused specifically on the craniocervical morphology of Pomeranian dogs in relation to Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia (CM/SM). The aims of Part I of this two-part study are to assess the intra-observer, interobserver, and intermodality reliability and agreement for various aspects of the craniocervical morphology of Pomeranians with and without CM/SM. Methods: Prospectively, Pomeranians were included that underwent both CT and MRI studies of the head and cervicothoracic vertebral column. Two observers (experienced and novice) independently performed CM and SM classifications, qualitative assessments, and quantitative measurements. The experienced observer performed these assessments twice. A third observer (experienced) performed CM and SM normal or abnormal classifications. Results: Ninety-nine (99) dogs were included. Interobserver reliability was influenced by observer experience level. For the experienced versus novice observers, substantial interobserver agreement was found for classification of SM as normal or abnormal (Cohen’s kappa = 0.63), while interobserver agreement was fair for classification of SM as normal or abnormal (Cohen’s kappa = 0.31). Interobserver, intra-observer, and intermodality reliability were variable for different measurements and assessments, and best overall for the CT-based measurements. Conclusions: Interobserver reliability and agreement results should be taken into account in the evaluation of results of future studies as well as the evaluation of imaging studies of Pomeranians presented clinically.
Studies in Pomeranians as well as other breeds have looked at clinical signs or external features as predictors of Chiari-like malformation (CM) and syringomyelia (SM). The aim of this study is to describe and analyze morphometric factors of the skull of Pomeranians with and without CM/SM by means of CT as well as manual external measurements. Ninety-two Pomeranians >12 months of age were included that underwent both CT and MRI studies of the head and cervicothoracic vertebral column. Two observers independently reviewed the CT imaging studies and performed quantitative measurements. External measurements were taken from the head of dogs when under general anesthesia using a tape measure and a caliper. Externally measured mandible length was associated with the probability of having SM (p = 0.043). Mandible length was moderately correlated with weight (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.585, p < 0.001). A cutoff for mandible length of 58 mm yielded a sensitivity of 96% (95% confidence interval 89-100%), meaning dogs in this study population with a mandible length shorter than 58 mm were highly likely to have SM. The measurement of the length of the mandible could help to determine the probability of a Pomeranian having SM, especially when combined with the presence or absence of owner reported clinicals signs as shown in previous studies.
Prototheca spp. are parasitic algae that can infect humans, cattle, cats and dogs. Although it is rarely seen, if protothecosis occurs in dogs, it is often fatal due to dissemination of the algae and a poor response to treatment. A 3-year-old, Scottish Collie dog, female, neutered, was presented with large bowel diarrhoea, weight loss and lethargy of 2 months. The dog had also experienced a short transient episode of acute horizontal nystagmus, left-sided head tilt and cervical pain 2 weeks before presentation. Histology of the colon demonstrated an erosive neutrophilic colitis with periodic acid-Schiff stain-positive structures compatible with Prototheca spp. confirmed using polymerase chain reaction. Treatment with nystatin (100,000 IU orally every 8 hours) was unsuccessful, and euthanasia was performed soon after diagnosis. This case report documents the first reported case of canine protothecosis in the Netherlands, and demonstrates that nystatin treatment is not successful in every canine protothecosis case.
Background: Chiari-like malformation (CM), Syringomyelia (SM) and middle ear effusion (MEE) are frequently observed disorders in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCSs), Pomeranians, and less frequently the Griffon. There are a few reports in which small dogs have been identified as suffering from CM/SM. Methods: From all MRI centers based in the Netherlands, MRI scans for small dog breeds performed for various reasons over a period of 8 years were collected. Scans that enabled a CM and/or SM evaluation were included and evaluated. Results: In total, 177 MRI scans were included. CM could be evaluated in 163 out of 177 dogs. In 63 dogs, no CM was observed, while 100 dogs had CM. SM could be evaluated in 144 out of 177 dogs. No SM was seen in 56 dogs and SM was seen in 88 dogs. Both CM and SM were seen in high frequency in the Chihuahua, French Bulldog, Griffon, and Pug but did also occur in lower frequencies in various other small breed dogs and crosses. CM and/or SM does occur in various other small dog breeds and crosses suggesting that it is indeed a type-related disorders. As it can cause serious clinical signs breeders should be aware of the risk of CM/SM when breeding with these small dog breeds.
IntroductionSyringomyelia (SM) is a heritable disorder causing a fluid filled cavity (FFC) in the spinal cord with a reported overall prevalence of 39 to 46% in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS). Breeders started screening their CKCS with MRI in the Netherlands since 2004 and in Denmark since 2015. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of MRI-based selection in breeding on the prevalence of SM.MethodMRI scans of 2,125 purebred CKCS were available. SM was defined as having a visible FFC in the spinal cord. The prevalence of SM per year of birth was calculated, and a logistic regression was used to evaluate the affected status of offspring from affected versus unaffected parents and age category of the parent and study the combined effect of parental status and age-category to evaluate the effect on the affected status of the offspring.ResultsThe mean FFC in affected CKCS was 2.03 ± 1.47 mm and ranged from 0.5 to 9 mm (median of 1.5 mm). An age effect exists as older CKCS, which has a higher frequency of being affected compared with younger CKCS. There was no significant sex predilection for SM in this dataset. The mean prevalence of SM decreased slightly from 38% (2010–2014; 2.8 ± 1.3 years of age (mean ± sd); median 2.6 years) to 27% (2015–2019; 2.4 ± 1.2 years of age; median 2.1 years) in the screened population of CKCS (p = 4.3e-07). Breeding with two affected parents increased the odds ratio with 3.08 for producing affected offspring (95% CI 1.58–6.04) compared with breeding with unaffected parents.DiscussionMRI-based screening and selection against SM led to a minimal decrease in the prevalence of SM in the Dutch and Danish CKCS population. Breeding with dogs with SM significantly increases the risk of affected offspring. As the disorder is progressive with age, and based on the results of this study, MRI-based screening for all CKCS is recommended at an age of 3 years or older, and to reduce SM more effectively, CKCS affected with SM should not be used for breeding.
IntroductionIdiopathic epilepsy (IE) is a common chronic neurological disorder in dogs. Breed specific knowledge on semiology, age of onset (AoO), seizure frequency, response to treatment, and Quality of Life (QoL) scores for both dog and owner are important. The Labradoodle is originally a cross between the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle. The aim of this study was to describe in detail the epilepsy, that is recognized in this designer breed.MethodAn online survey was distributed through several platforms to owners of Labradoodles. Only Labradoodles, either registered as such or bred as a Labradoodle were included. To classify the Labradoodles in a TIER level of confidence the criteria of the International Veterinary Task Force were used.ResultsForty labradoodles were included. Thirty-three Labradoodles were classified as IE or suspected IE cases and appeared to have an AoO of 2.3 ± 1.3 years, and a seizure frequency of 5.4 ± 6.5 seizures/year (range 0–25). Seven dogs were classified as EUC, two dogs started before 6 months of age, and five dogs had their first seizures at 8.4 ± 1.2 years of age. The seizure frequency for all EUC dogs was 5.0 ± 3.0 seizures/year (range 0–11). Stress, for both the (suspected) IE and EUC cases, was the most frequently reported seizure precipitating factor (95% of the dogs). AoO and seizure frequency did not seem to be influenced by type of housing, type of owner, or the dog’s character as interpreted by the owner. Cluster seizures (CS) were seen in 33% and status epilepticus (SE) in 10% of the included Labradoodles. Many dogs did not need treatment (38%) or only one anti-seizure medication (43%), in which case they tended to respond favorably to treatment. QoL scores were high for both dog (8.3 ± 1.8) and owner (7.3 ± 2.2).DiscussionCompared to the progenitor breeds, epilepsy of Labradoodles is phenotypically like that of the Standard Poodle, except for the existence CS and SE in the Labradoodle. The epilepsy seen in this designer breed has a favorable outcome compared to several other breeds.
A 10.5-year-old, male, entire labrador retriever dog was presented for chronic progressive ataxia and recent onset of a left-sided head tilt and salivation. Neurological examination findings were deemed consistent with a multifocal brain and spinal cord neuroanatomic localisation. Ophthalmological examination of the right eye revealed pupil shape abnormality (dyscoria), a pale uveal mass lesion and white cellular sediment in the anterior chamber. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, eyes, thoracolumbar and lumbosacral spinal cord and surrounding structures showed multiple lesions affecting the central nervous system (brain), peripheral nervous system (left trigeminal nerve) and right eye. Cerebrospinal fluid, right eye anterior chamber fluid and fine-needle aspirate biopsy of the uveal mass lesion yielded a cytological diagnosis of lymphoma (suspected large granular lymphocytic). The dog was discharged with palliative treatment and euthanased at home 4 days later. This case report documents the cytological diagnosis of lymphoma in the cerebrospinal fluid, intraocular fluid and fine-needle aspirate of a uveal mass in a dog.
Idiopathic epilepsy (IE) has been known to be inherited in the Belgian Tervuren for many decades. Risk genotypes for IE in this breed have recently been identified on Canis familiaris chromosomes (CFA) 14 and 37. In the current study, the allele frequencies of these loci were analyzed to determine whether dog breeders had employed a purposeful selection against IE, leading to a reduction in risk-associated allele frequency within the breed over time. The allele frequencies of two generational groupings of Belgian Tervuren with and without IE were compared. Allele frequencies for risk-associated alleles on CFA14 were unchanged between 1985 and 2015, whereas those on CFA37 increased during that time in the control population (p < 0.05). In contrast, dogs with IE showed a decrease (p < 0.05) in the IE risk-associated allele frequency at the CFA37 locus. Seizure prevalence in the Belgian Tervuren appears to be increasing. These results suggest that, despite awareness that IE is inherited, selection against IE has not been successful.
Bromide is the first effective antiseizure medication used in human medicine since the XIX century. Initially met with skepticism, bromide quickly gained enthusiasm within the medical field until being largely replaced by newer antiseizure medications with significantly fewer adverse effects in people. In veterinary medicine, bromide continues to be used in the management of epileptic patients for over 30 years, yet adverse effects can impact owners and patients alike. We sought to provide the general practitioner and veterinary neurologist with insightful information on both the positive and negative attributes of bromide, explore factors that may influence its desirability as an antiseizure medication in specific veterinary cases and elucidate its current role in modern epilepsy treatment for veterinary patients. It’s also our endeavor to discuss the current use as an alternative or add-on with other known antiseizure medications and potential future studies that might enhance our understanding and use of this medication.
Earlier, we described a breed-specific inflammatory myopathy in Dutch Kooiker dogs (Het Nederlandse Kooikerhondje), one of the nine Dutch breeds. The disease commonly manifests itself with clinical signs of difficulty walking, muscle weakness, exercise intolerance, and/or dysphagia. In nearly all dogs’ creatine kinase (CK) activity was elevated. Histopathology reveals the infiltration of inflammatory cells within the skeletal muscles. The objective of this study was to further investigate and characterize the histopathological changes in muscle tissue and immunophenotype the inflammatory infiltrates. FFPE fixed-muscle biopsies from 39 purebred Kooiker dogs were included and evaluated histopathologically according to a tailored classification scheme for skeletal muscle inflammation. As in other breed-related inflammatory myopathies, multifocal, mixed, and predominantly mononuclear cell infiltration was present, with an initial invasion of viable muscle fibres and the surrounding stroma leading to inflammation, necrosis, and tissue damage. Immunophenotyping primarily revealed lymphohistiocytic infiltrates, with CD3+ T-cells being the predominant inflammatory cell type, accompanied by CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells. The concurrent expression of MHC-II class molecules on myofibres suggests their involvement in initiating and maintaining inflammation. Additionally, CD20+ B-cells were identified, though in lower numbers compared to T-cells, and IBA-1-positive macrophages were frequently seen. These findings suggest a breed-specific subtype of polymyositis in Kooiker dogs, akin to other breeds. This study sheds light on the immune response activation, combining adaptive and innate mechanisms, contributing to our understanding of polymyositis in this breed.
IntroductionChiari-like malformation (CM) and syringomyelia (SM) are disorders that, in dogs, affect mainly small and toy breeds, including the Pomeranian. These disorders are linked to a great number of (owner-reported) clinical signs (ORCS) suggestive of pain. Aging was associated with an increased risk of having SM in several studies. However, there are only a few longitudinal studies that assess the presence and severity of CM/SM over time in CKCS dogs and progression of SM was linked to progression of clinical signs. The aim of this study was to investigate ORCS, CM/SM classification, and quantitative syrinx parameters in relation to progression of time (age) within individual Pomeranians.Materials and methodsPomeranians with or without ORCS and with or without diagnoses of CM/SM were included that had undergone two (or more) MRI studies of the craniocervicothoracic region between January 2020 and June 2023. Classification of CM/SM and quantitative syrinx measurements were performed. Absolute values as well as ratios for syrinx height, width, and cross-sectional area were included for analysis.ResultsA total of 19 Pomeranians were included in the study, of which 11 were male (58%) and 8 were female (42%). The median age at the time of MRI1 was 26 months (range 7–44 months). The median scan interval was 26 months (range 11–49 months). Eleven dogs (58%) were presented with ORCS at the time of MRI1, whereas the other 8 dogs (42%) had no ORCS at that time. At the time of MRI2, there were 17/19 dogs (89%) with ORCS and 2/19 dogs without ORCS (11%). Dogs were significantly more likely to have ORCS at MRI2 than MRI1 (p = 0. 0411). There was no significant difference between CM/SM classification at the time of MRI1 and MRI2. Significant differences were found between MRI1 and MRI2 for syrinx height (based on transverse images) (absolute value and ratio P = 0.0059), syrinx width (absolute value P = 0.1055, ratio P = 0.0039), and syrinx cross sectional area (absolute value P = 0.0195, ratio P = 0.0217).DiscussionThere are differences in the presence or absence of ORCS as well as quantitative syrinx measurements in Pomeranians at different ages. This finding supports that longitudinal changes occur in the SM status of Pomeranians.
Background: The aim of Part II of this two-part study is to describe and analyze the association of various aspects and measurements related to the morphometry of the skull and craniocervical region to CM/SM status of Pomeranians, by means of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: Prospectively, Pomeranians were included that underwent both CT and MRI studies of the head and cervicothoracic vertebral column. For those cases where qualitative classifications differed between observers, the experienced observer re-evaluated the studies and decided on a final classification that was used for further analysis. For quantitative measurements, the means of the observers’ measurements were used for analysis. Results: Among statistically significant differences in measurements, we found that dogs with SM had a significantly shorter clivus length based on both MRI (p = 0.01) and CT measurements (p = 0.01), and a significantly smaller caudal cranial fossa area based on both MRI (p = 0.02) and CT measurements (p = 0.02). Conclusions: Significant morphometrical differences were identified between dogs with or without CM/SM. The findings in this study add to those already described in other breeds and provide further insight into factors that may play a role in the pathogenesis of CM/SM in Pomeranians.
A 5.5 years-old male Dachshund was presented for evaluation because of undesirable behavior including barking, biting, sucking and licking the right-side flank, ventrally and slightly caudally to the level of the surgical incision 7 days after hemilaminectomy for a right-sided L1-2 intervertebral disc extrusion. The dog was being treated with oral gabapentin 10 mg/kg q8h. Repeat clinical examination on three occasions after post-operative discharge did not reveal any signs of hyperesthesia or neurological deficits and the behavior was not observed in the clinic during consultations. During a separate day of hospital admittance with the aim of evaluating for the presence or absence of the behavior, the dog also did not exhibit the behavior. Oral paracetamol 12 mg/kg q8h was added to medical treatment. When the dog was discharged and returned home, the behavior was immediately seen again. When the owners implemented verbal punishment, the behavior immediately ceased. The owner verbally corrected the dogs' behavior for two excitative days. Upon telephone consultation 3 days later, the owner reported that they only had observed three recurrences of the behavior that immediately ceased following verbal correction and did not recur thereafter. Oral analgesic medication was tapered and discontinued. No recurrence of the behavior was noticed during the next 2 months. The authors postulated the dog possibly expressed signs of neuropathic pain in the post-operative period, or that the behavior was of a "compulsive disorder-like" nature as it only occurred when the dog was at home and in the presence of the owner. The eventual outcome and result of verbal corrections implemented by the owner seem to support the latter. In conclusion, compulsive-like undesirable behavior should be considered a differential diagnosis in dogs in the post-operative period of procedures possibly associated with the development or expression of signs of neuropathic pain.
