ABSTRACT: The present study described the chemical composition and somatic cell score (SCS) of samples of refrigerated raw milk collected from commercial farms in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in order to better understand the behavior of constituents present in non-fatty solids (NFS) in milk according to the season of the year. Means were used to describe statistical data. To estimate the probability of NFS levels meeting IN 76 (BRAZIL, 2018), binary logistic regression was used. It was reported that 18.2% (233.817) of analytical results showed NFS below 8.4%, representing the minimum required by IN 76. The highest average NFS level observed in the five-year period was registered in the micro-region of Passo Fundo (8.70%) in winter. The microregion with the lowest results was Porto Alegre (8.53%); however, it still demonstrated levels within the limits established by IN 76. The study indicates that milk constituents show differences between seasons. In autumn and winter, the constituents remained equal to or higher than those required by current legislation, while spring and summer were the periods with the lowest NFS values. The SCS was also influenced by the seasons, with the highest rates in spring, summer, and autumn.
The search for forage cultivars that provide higher yields with quality in periods of forage shortage, whether in isolated or mixed management, is essential for livestock stability. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the forage performance and nutritive value of rye cultivars mixtures (BRS Progresso, BRS Serrano and Temprano) from different production cycles compared to the isolated management of rye, dual-purpose wheat cvs. (BRS Tarumã and BRS Pastoreio) and black oat cv. Embrapa 139 Neblina as controls. The experiment was conducted at a randomized complete block design, with four rye associations and the isolated cultivation of wheat, oat, and rye. Dry matter (DM) yield and nutritive value, such as content of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and crude protein (CP) content were evaluated for each cut and total values. There was difference (P<0.001) in total DM, the highest yield was in single cultivation as well as mixtures with Temprano. BRS Serrano and BRS Progresso and their mixture had lower leaf blade percentage in the total DM. There were differences (P<0.05) in NDF concentration (55.1 to 70.60%), ADF (15.2 to 34.7%), and CP (27.4 to 36.8%) levels along harvests. Among cultivars, Temprano showed the highest proportion of leaf blades and total DM yield.
Conservation agriculture (CA) is an important aspect of the sustainable management of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] in production systems. This work evaluated the effects of soil management systems (SMS) combined with liming performed in 1986 and in 2008 on soil physical properties and soybean yield. The study used data from the 2008/09 until the 2015/16 soybean crop seasons from a long-term experiment settled in 1986 in Passo Fundo, southern Brazil. A split-plot design was used with the SMS as the main plots arranged in randomized blocks, and the cropping systems as the sub-plots randomized within SMS. The experiment evaluated the effects of four annually performed SMS: no-tillage (NT) and reduced-tillage (RT) (i.e. two CA systems), disk ploughing + disk harrowing (DPD) and moldboard ploughing + disk harrowing (MPD) [i.e. two conventional tillage (CT) systems]. Soil bulk density (ρs) and total, micro and macro porosities (φtotal, φmicro and φmacro) were evaluated in 2008 and in 2016 in the 0‒2.5 cm (L0 − 2.5) and 10‒12.5 cm (L10 − 12.5) soil layers. After 22 years of the beginning of the experiment and compared with the undisturbed soil (from a native forest area near to the experiment), all SMS increased ρs by an average of 28
Context Sustainable management of the soil is one of the pillars of conservation agriculture (CA). Aims The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term effects of soil management systems (SMS) on liming efficiency, soil chemical properties and wheat yield. Methods This study was part of a long-term experiment established in 1986 in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, but using data from 2008 to 2015 to explore the effects of agricultural lime applied in 2008. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design where the main plot (SMS) were arranged in randomised blocks and the cropping systems (sub-plot treatments) were randomised within the main plots. This study assessed the effects of the SMS; i.e. two CA systems [no-tillage (NT) and reduced tillage] and two conventional tillage (CT) systems (disk ploughing + disk harrowing annually, and mouldboard ploughing + disk harrowing annually). Key results The NT system was the most sustainable due to improvements in soil organic carbon concentration. After liming, CT systems were more effective than CA systems in decreasing Al3+ toxicity and increasing soil pH and Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations at deeper soil layers. The NT system had a considerable advantage over other SMS, due to a greater average wheat yield (18%). Conclusions The SMS evaluated in this study modified chemical properties when compared with the native forest area. The NT system was the least detrimental to soil organic carbon, an important indicator of soil quality. Implications The NT system provided greater average wheat yield (18%), and thus was the most viable SMS for subtropical spring wheat production.
The objective was to evaluate whether rotatinuous stocking management in dual-purpose wheat genotypes provides greater forage performance compared to the traditional rotational grazing management, which could become an alternative to ryegrass, once this new management strategy has been validated. Three dual-purpose wheat cultivars (BRS Pastoreio, BRS Tarumã and BRS Tarumaxi) and a black oat cultivar (Embrapa 139 Neblina) were used in the experiment, in traditional rotational and rotatinuous stocking. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete blocks design, with treatments arranged in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme (cultivars x management strategies), with pre and post-harvest heights in traditional rotational management (RT) of 25 and 5 cm, and 25 and 15 in the rotatinuous stocking management (RN). The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Trigo, in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. Nitrogen was applied after sowing and after cuts, according to the management strategies. Dry matter yield, percentage of leaf blades and forage accumulation per cut and total were evaluated. Wheat cultivars in rotatinuous stocking management showed higher numbers of cuts, greater cycle, percentage of leaves and average rate of forage accumulation, with smaller intervals between cycles. The total forage production showed no difference between the cultivars, however, BRS Tarumaxi was higher in the rotatinuous stocking management. Thus, responses between the genotypes in relation to the management strategies adopted are different.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the impact of different post-partum disorders on milk yield and composition. One hundred and fifteen Holstein cows from a commercial dairy farm located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil were monitored up to 62 days post-partum. During this period, body condition score evaluation and animal clinical examination were conducted. Percentages of fat, protein, and lactose, as well as somatic cells score, were determined in milk samples. The AST activity and concentrations of NEFA, calcium, and BHBA, were analyzed in blood samples. The occurrence of clinical disorders was identified in 30 (26%) cows. Subclinical disorders were identified in 64 (56%) cows. Only 21 (18%) cows did not suffer any kind of disorder within the studied period. In this study, no significant differences were found in milk production, protein, and somatic cell count in clinical, subclinical, and healthy cows. Milk fat and the fat: protein quotient (F:P) were higher in cows with clinical disorders and the 6 to 21 days in milk, and lactose were lower in cows with clinical disorders and the 22 to 42 days in milk (P<0.05).
Adopting wheat that has additional aptitudes to the only function of grain production in crop-livestock integration systems may be an economical alternative for better using the vast expanse of farmland during the autumn-winter period in southern Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate economically the crop-livestock integration (CLI) system, in comparison to systems of grain production only. The treatments consisted of six CLI systems, containing either annual winter pasture, soil cover or dualpurpose cereals: system I (wheat/soybean and vetch/maize); system II (wheat/soybean and black oat/maize pasture); system III (wheat/soybean and black oat/soybean pasture); system IV (wheat/soybean and pea/maize); system V (wheat/soybean, dualpurpose triticale/soybean and vetch/soybean); and system VI (wheat/soybean, dual-purpose white oat/soy and dual-purpose wheat/ soybean). The treatments were repeated four times in the randomized block design. Calculation of the operational cost and net return of the production systems followed the technical coefficient matrix of the experiment and the prices of inputs and machines from the cultivation year, based on the 2016 market . Systems II and III, which had annual winter pastures, were more profitable than systems I and IV, with legume cover cropping. System VI, with white oat and double-purpose wheat, demonstrated a higher economic return when compared to the system V, with triticale. Overall, system II stood out due to its higher net return.
The objective of this study was to evaluate soil management and crop rotation systems. The treatments consisted of four types of soil management: 1) no-tillage, 2) minimum tillage, 3) conventional tillage with disc plows, and 4) conventional tillage with moldboard plows, and three crop rotation systems: system I - wheat/soybean; system II - wheat/soybean and vetch/ sorghum; and system III - wheat/soybean, vetch/sorghum and white oat/soybeans. An experimental design of randomized blocks with split-plots and three replicates was used. The main plot consisted of soil management systems, while the split-plots consisted of crop rotation systems. Maize and sorghum were the crops that showed the highest energy return in relation to the other studied species. No-tillage showed higher energy conversion and balance (12.31 and 45,011 Mcal ha -1 ) than minimum tillage (11.33 and 41,100 Mcal ha -1 ), conventional tillage using disk plow (9.94 and 34,142 Mcal ha -1 ) and conventional tillage using moldboard plow (10.21 and 35,170 Mcal ha -1 ), respectively. Wheat in crop rotation had higher energy efficiency than the monoculture of this cereal.

The yield and grain quality of dual-purposes wheat cultivars may fluctuate due to the applied management, producing lower results than the expected. This study aimed to determine if the application of an additional dose of nitrogen, at the earing stage beginning, increases the grain yield and modifies the technological quality in double-purpose wheat, regardless of the cutting regime. The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Embrapa Trigo, in Coxilha-RS, Brazil, 2017. Two dual-purpose wheat cultivars (BRS Taruma and BRS Pastoreio) and three cutting regimes (no cut, one and two cuts) were used, being submitted or not the application of additional nitrogen fertilization at the beginning of the earing. A trifatorial arrangement was employed, with a randomized block design and three replicates. Data attained were submitted to analysis of variance and compared by the Tukey test at 5% of probability. The evaluated attributes were the height of the plant at harvest, yield, thousand grain weight, number of spikelets/ear, weight of the hectoliter, falling number, and protein in the grain. Additional application of nitrogen did not increase the yield for any studied genotypes, regardless of the cutting regimes, and as for grain quality, the differences between the materials should be taken into account.
