Previous examinations of the relationship between mind wandering (MW) during post-encoding periods and subsequent memory consolidation has led to mixed results. This study aimed to investigate how different mental states during a retention interval impact associative and relational memory consolidation. Two hundred and four participants encoded object-face associations before completing either a low-demand (1-back) or high-demand (3-back) post-encoding task for 15 minutes. Thought probes assessed mental states (on-task focus, MW related to encoded material, MW involving mental time travel, and mind blanking) during the post-encoding task. Associative memory was tested twice, immediately after encoding and following the retention interval. In the delayed test relational memory was also assessed. The 1-back condition elicited more MW, particularly involving mental time travel, while the 3-back condition increased on-task focus. However, memory performance did not differ between conditions. Moreover, the frequencies of different mental states did not correlate with measures of memory retention. Despite successfully manipulating mental states through cognitive load, we found no evidence that MW or other mental states during brief retention intervals impact memory performances. A non-registered, additional condition where the post-encoding task was replaced by a simple perceptual task was added to control for any potential disruptive effect of working memory on memory consolidation. A pattern of results similar to the 1-back condition was found, with no effect of mind wandering on memory performance. These findings challenge previous studies suggesting a link between MW and memory processes, indicating this relationship may be not as straightforward as previously thought.
Despite well-established cultural nuances regarding the perception of aging, there is a paucity of research specifically examining how different cultures distinguish between normal aging processes and pathological conditions in older adults. The present study aimed to offer insights into the socio-cultural influences on this distinction. It addressed this gap by comparing the perception of 516 French and 210 Congolese individuals. A specially designed 55-item questionnaire depicting various situations involving older individuals was administered in paper format. Participants assessed each situation on a Likert-type scale as indicative of either normal or pathological aging. The situations depicted cognitive, behavioral, and emotional changes commonly associated with neurocognitive disorders as an illustration of pathological aging. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and linear regression modeling. In line with our hypothesis, French participants rated more severely the situations compared to Congolese participants. Moreover, French participants performed better in differentiating between situations illustrating normal or pathological aging, while Congolese individuals considered all situations as reflecting normal aging. This research showed that perception of normal or pathological behavior in aging is not universally shared across cultures. It also revealed that the general population lacks scientific knowledge on normal and pathological aging, outlining a need for improvement regarding public education. Differences between populations also suggest that public education should be specifically tailored and contextualized to improve knowledge on aging. We encourage further studies on African populations from a neuropsychological perspective for better representativeness of the human species and to facilitate access to unbiased scientific knowledge.
The conception of memory as structurally and functionally different multiple systems is largely dominant in clinical neuropsychology at least in France. In addition to the focus on the structure of memory or its components, we suggest that it would be clinically more relevant for psychologists to also consider in conjunction a functional and processes-based approach to memory. Despite longstanding disagreement in the literature between these approaches, we encourage psychologists to perceive each memory conception as proposing different levels of explanation and therefore focusing on complementary questions; how is the patient's memory: efficient or impaired, relying more on a structural analysis or why it works this way, based on process identification. The present article proposes a reflection in favor of a theoretical realignment in the assessment and remediation of memory in clinical neuropsychology. It suggest that the structural and functional approaches to memory can coexist in parallel in clinical neuropsychology, advocating the freedom of the clinician to rely on one or the other approach depending on the level of explanation sought, the question asked or the therapeutic goals. Introduction. - Prospective memory (PM) is the ability to remember to perform activities to be carried out in the future. This form of future-oriented cognition is crucial in daily life for managing activities as well as for maintaining independence and autonomy, especially during aging. This study focused on the Virtual Week, an assessment instrument of PM in which participants are asked to remember to perform lifelike activities. Objectives. - The present study aimed to provide a French adaptation of the Virtual Week and to test whether this adaptation was able to identify age-related declines in PM. We also evaluated the internal consistency and the split-half reliability of the adapted version. Method. - We collected data from 44 healthy younger (18-30 years) and 44 healthy older adults (65-80 years) and tested whether the French version of the Virtual Week was sensitive to decline in PM performance in older adults, in accordance to theories on normal aging and PM. Results. - The French Virtual Week was able to detect age-related decrements in PM and demonstrated strong psychometric properties. Conclusion. - These findings broadly support the sensitivity and the reliability of the French adaptation of the Virtual Week, thus encouraging its use in current clinical practice. Background and aims. - The association between white matter abnormalities (WMA) and cognitive decline previously reported in poststroke patients has been mainly documented using visual scales. However, automated segmentation of WMA provides a precise determination of the volume of WMA. Nonetheless, it is rarely used in the stroke population and its potential advantage over visual scales is still unsettled. The objective of this study was to examine whether automated segmentation of WMA provides a better account than the visual Fazekas and Wahlund scales of the decline in executive functions and processing speed in stroke patients. Methods. - The analyses were conducted on the 358 patients of the GRECogVASC cohort with an MRI performed at six months poststroke in the Amiens center. WMA were visually analyzed using the Fazekas (subcortical abnormalities) and Wahlund scales. Segmentation was performed using LST (3.0.3). Following preliminary studies to determine the optimal segmentation threshold, we examined the relationship between cognitive status and WMA volume computed at each threshold using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Finally, we assessed the ability of both Fazekas and Wahlund visual scores and WMA volume to account for cognitive scores by using a bivariate Pearson correlation analysis, comparing correlation coefficients with the Fisher transformation and repeating correlation analysis after adjustment for the lesion volume. Results. - Increasing the threshold led to an underestimation of WMA (P = 0.0001) (significant for a threshold >= 0.2) and an improvement in correct rejection of signal changes in the stroke cavity (P = 0.02) (significant for a threshold <= 0.5), susceptibility artifacts (P = 0.002) (significant for a threshold <= 0.6), and corticospinal degeneration (P = 0.03) (significant for a threshold <= 0.5). WMA volume decreased with increasing threshold (P = 0.0001). Areas under the curve (AUC) did not differ according to the threshold (processing speed: P = 0.85, executive cognitive functions: P = 0.7). Correlation coefficients between cognitive scores and WMA were higher for WMA volume than the Fazekas (processing speed: Z = -3.442, P = 0.001; executive functions: Z = -2.751, P = 0.006) and Wahlund scores (processing speed: Z = -3.615, P = 0.0001; executive functions: Z = -2.769, P = 0.006). Adjustment for lesion volume did not alter the correlations with WMA volume (processing speed: r = -0.327 [95%CI: -0.416; -0.223], P = 0.0001; executive functions: r = -0.262 [95%CI: -0.363; -0.150], P = 0.0001). Conclusion. - This study shows that WMA volume assessed by automated segmentation provides a better account of cognitive disorders than visual analysis. This should favor its wider use to refine imaging determinants of poststroke cognitive disorders. (c) 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. While previous research has suggested that prospective memory may be enhanced by providing a social motive (i.e., social importance) or by promising a monetary reward for successful performance, to the best of our knowledge, the underlying mechanisms responsible for these effects are still largely unexplored. In a sample of 96 younger adults, this study investigated how social importance and promising a monetary reward influence the prospective component and the retrospective component of event-based prospective memory separately, with the application of a multinomial modeling approach. Results revealed enhanced prospective memory performance for all importance conditions compared to a standard condition. This improvement was characterized by an increased allocation of resource-demanding attentional processes in performing the prospective memory task at the expense of the ongoing task without an increase in the perceived importance of the prospective memory task. The model-based analyses showed that the beneficial effects of importance arise from an increased engagement of the prospective component, leaving the estimates for the retrospective component unaffected.
Studies on the genetic factors involved in binge drinking (BD) and its associated traits are very rare. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate differences in the association between impulsivity, emotion regulation and BD in a sample of young adults according to the rs6265/Val66Met variant in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene, a well-known candidate gene in alcohol use disorders. We recruited 226 university students (112 women), aged between 18 and 25 years old, from two centers in France. The participants completed measures related to alcohol consumption, depression severity, state anxiety levels, impulsivity (UPPS-P), and difficulties in emotion regulation [Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS)]. The relationship between the BD score and the clinical characteristics in the BDNF genotype groups was assessed by partial correlation analyses and moderation analyses. The partial correlation analyses showed that, in the Val/Val genotype group, the BD score was positively related to UPPS-P Lack of Premeditation and Sensation Seeking scores. In the Met carriers group, the BD score was positively related to UPPS-P Positive Urgency, lack of Premeditation, lack of Perseverance and Sensation Seeking scores and to Clarity score of the DERS. Moreover, the BD score was positively associated with depression severity and state anxiety scores. The moderation analyses revealed that BDNF Val/Met genotype moderated the relationship between several clinical variables and BD. The results of the present study support the hypothesis of common and specific vulnerability factors regarding impulsivity and emotion regulation difficulties associated with BD according to this BDNF rs6265 polymorphism.
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in two periods of confinement during the year 2020 that led to changes in lifestyle patterns. The purpose of our study was to assess the impact of the lockdowns on the quantity (i.e., schedule and time in bed) and quality (i.e., difficulties and parasomnias) of sleep in French college students. During the first and second lockdowns, students were asked to answer an online questionnaire consisting of 23 questions. This questionnaire gathered information on the real and ideal schedules of getting up and going to bed, the time in bed, as well as the parasomnias and difficulties related to sleep (difficulties in falling asleep, waking up, lack of sleep feeling). The results showed that students slept later and spent more time in bed on week-ends than during the week, with these effects being more pronounced during the first confinement than during the second. The majority of students reported poor sleep quality, difficulty falling asleep, early awakening, and a feeling of sleep deprivation. The most common parasomnias were episodes of nightmares and sleepiness. Sleep difficulties and reported parasomnias were greater during the second confinement than during the first. Sleep debt, was still present during the lockdowns. The reported sleep difficulties and parasomnias reflect poor sleep quality, despite the reduction in social constraints. Explanatory hypotheses as well as prevention perspectives regarding sleep hygiene were considered. (c) 2022 Societe Francaise de Psychologie. Published by Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
Introduction. - Individuals with psychiatric disorders have been the focus of vigilance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of this retrospective study was to estimate the influence of the living conditions of these people, on the evolution of their mood during the first lockdown in spring 2020 in France. Method. - A questionnaire was proposed to 86 patients with psychiatric illnesses followed in ambulatory care, in order to evaluate their living conditions, their psychological resources and their perception of the health crisis. Patients responded to scales designed to assess perceived changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms during confinement. Analyses of variance and comparison of means were performed in order to study the variables that were significantly explanatory on the evolution of the disorders. Results. - A majority of patients reported stability of anxiety and depression symptoms during confinement. Alterations in lifestyle, such as an increase in sleep disturbance and smoking, had an effect on anxiety or depression. Occupational activities such as self-care, sports or outings influenced symptomatology. The ability to build on past experiences or to project positively into the future had an effect on symptomatology. Discussion. - These data highlight the specificities of the constraints encountered in lockdown by individuals previously suffering from psychiatric illnesses. Our results point out resources to be considered in adjusting the care modalities of these patients. (c) 2022 Societe Francaise de Psychologie. Published by Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
This study evaluated the effect of sleep in mediating the performance of associative and relational spatial memories in an immersive spatialised task. It also investigated how items presented during the task were incorporated into participants' dreams. A total of 54 participants were assigned to either a wake or sleep condition in their home setting: 27 participants stayed awake during a normal day between the learning and the testing phases of a spatial task, while 27 other participants slept in their home according to their usual sleep schedule. Subjective dream experiences during the night were reported by the participants using a paper/pencil diary. Results showed that memory performances for the testing phase were greater for the Sleep group at both associative and relational levels compared to an equivalent period of wake. The examination of dream reports revealed that 6 dream reports out of 17 (35.29%) collected in the Sleep group incorporated items related to the task. To our knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate a protective effect of sleep on associative and relational memory performance using an immersive spatialised VR task and with a full night's sleep occurring in a home setting that respected the participant's usual sleep schedule. As a perspective, we proposed methodological improvements for future studies investigating dreams and their relationship with memory processes.
A lucid dream is a dream in which one is conscious of dreaming and can possibly control the dream or passively observe its unfolding. Frequencies of lucid dreaming (LD), dream with awareness, and dream with actual control were previously investigated in a French student population. As a student population usually differs on oneiric and sleep characteristics (such as sleep quality) from the general population, more investigations were needed. Additionally, it is yet unresolved if LD is related to one's overall sleep quality. This study aims at describing and comparing dream experience frequencies (dream, lucid dreams, awareness, and control) and sleep quality assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) among students (n = 274) and in a general population sample (n = 681). It also aims at evaluating if dream experience frequencies can predict sleep quality across these two samples. Predictive models of PSQI score controlling for age and gender were not significant in the student group while they were all marginally predictive for the general population. However, none of these models showed that the frequency of dream experiences could actually help predict the quality of sleep as the significance of the model was carried over only by the gender variable. These results are discussed in line with previous studies on LD frequencies. Several methodological adjustments for future study are proposed.
