Mit dem ORCID-Standard wurde ein System der persistenten Identifikatoren für Forschende geschaffen. Der Förderung von ORCID in Deutschland widmete sich von 2016 bis 2022 das von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderte Projekt ORCID DE. Dank des Projekts konnte die Anzahl der in Deutschland registrierten ORCID iDs von etwa 44 000 im Jahr 2016 auf 356 800 im Jahr 2024 gesteigert werden. Die Schaffung einer Dialogplattform und der Aufbau eines nationalen Konsortiums sind weitere Erfolge von ORCID DE. Auch wurde die Integration von ORCID in zentrale Standards der Informationsinfrastruktur vorangetrieben und die Vernetzung mit der Gemeinsamen Normdatei (GND) durch verschiedene Verfahren der Vernetzung befördert. Mit der Integration von ORCID in die Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) wurde die Sichtbarkeit von ORCID in Open-Access-Publikationen gesteigert. Durch den Aufbau des ORCID-DE-Monitors wurde ein Informationssystem zur Verbreitung von ORCID auf internationaler Ebene geschaffen. Der Beitrag beschreibt die Arbeit und Ergebnisse des Projekts und dokumentiert anhand der formulierten ACTION-Prinzipien Anregungen für ähnliche Standardisierungsinitiativen im Bereich der digitalen Informationsinfrastruktur.
Key points The ORCID DE project, from 2016 to 2022, promoted ORCID in Germany through a project‐driven approach. The project promoted the dissemination of ORCID in Germany. The number of IDs registered for Germany increased from approximately 44,000 in 2016 to 300,070 in 2023. The linkage of ORCID with the bibliographic Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND; translated: Integrated Authority File) standard in German‐speaking countries has contributed to the success of ORCID in Germany. The promotion of ORCID in Germany was based on six central areas: information, consortium, standardization, implementation, monitoring, and networking. The ORCID DE Monitor captures and analyses the development of ORCID on a national and international level. The ACTION principles highlight crucial measures in promoting a standard, such as ORCID. ACTION stands for Awareness, ConnectiviTy, IntegratiOn, and Networking.

Integrating ORCID into the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) increased the visibility of ORCID in open access publications. The development of the ORCID DE Monitor created an information system to disseminate ORCID on an international level. The article describes the work and results of the project and documents suggestions for similar standardization initiatives in the field of digital information infrastructure, based on the formulated ACTION principles.
On October 5, 2022, the “Workshop on Quality Management at Research Data Repositories” – jointly organized by re3data COREF and CoreTrustSeal – was held online with more than 70 participants attending. The objective of the workshop was to discuss activities research data repositories perform to assure, assess, and improve data quality. The workshop started with input from the workshop organizers: re3data COREF presented results of a recent suvey on quality management at repositories, and CoreTrustSeal shared the perspective of a certification organization. Then, repositories from different disciplinary backgrounds presented their approaches to quality management. The workshop concluded with a breakout session and a plenary discussion on options for making information on data quality assurance more visible.
For more than ten years, re3data, a global registry of research data repositories (RDRs), has been helping scientists, funding agencies, libraries, and data centers with finding, identifying, and referencing RDRs. As the world's largest directory of RDRs, re3data currently describes over 3,000 RDRs on the basis of a comprehensive metadata schema. The service allows searching for RDRs of any type and from all disciplines, and users can filter results based on a wide range of characteristics. The re3data RDR descriptions are available as Open Data accessible through an API and are utilized by numerous Open Science services. re3data is engaged in various initiatives and projects concerning data management and is mentioned in the policies of many scientific institutions, funding organizations, and publishers. This article reflects on the ten-year experience of running re3data and discusses ten key issues related to the management of an Open Science service that caters to RDRs worldwide.
According to the survey we conducted prior to this webinar series dedicated to the APAC community, metadata quality was one of the most voted topics to be covered in the webinars, which is understandable - out of FAIRsFAIR’s 15 assessment metrics for the FAIRness of research objects, 12 are about metadata. Rich and persistent metadata that incorporate identifiers and encode generic and domain-specific information, accessibility and licensing, and links between objects using standardized vocabulary and communication protocols is the cornerstone of a versatile, equitable, and trustworthy scholarly infrastructure ecosystem. In this webinar, we want to focus on the various aspects of enriching the metadata of research outputs. What is considered rich or complete, what does it mean to the metadata capture and curation workflows, how is this process supported, what services are underpinned by which part of the metadata, etc? In this webinar, we’ll hear from Matthias Liffers from ARDC and representatives from Crossref, DataCite, and ORCID, to share their perspectives and provide guidance toward a world with richer metadata. Persistent identifiers (PIDs) for scientific organizations such as research institutions and research funding agencies are a further decisive piece of the puzzle to promote standardization in the scholarly publication process—especially in light of the already established digital object identifiers (DOIs) for research outputs and ORCID iDs for researchers. The application of these PIDs enables automated data flows and guarantees the persistent linking of information objects. Moreover, PIDs are fundamental components for the implementation of open science. For example, the application of PIDs for scientific organizations is of crucial importance when analyzing publications and the costs of the transition to open access at an institution. To find out more about the status quo of the use and adoption of organization IDs in Germany, a ‘Survey on the Need for and Use of Organization IDs at Higher Education Institutions and Non-University Research Institutions in Germany’ was conducted among 548 scientific institutions in Germany in the period from July 13 to December 4, 2020, as part of the DFG-funded project ORCID DE. One hundred and eighty-three institutions participated in what was the largest survey to date on organization IDs in Germany. The survey included questions on the knowledge, adoption, and use of organization IDs at scientific institutions. Moreover, respondent institutions were asked about their needs with regard to organization IDs and their metadata (e.g., in terms of relationships and granularity). The present paper provides a comprehensive overview of the results of the survey conducted as part of the aforementioned project and contributes to the promotion and increased awareness of organization IDs.

The use of these PIDs enables automated data flows and guarantees the permanent linking of information objects. Furthermore, PIDs are fundamental components for the implementation of Open Science. For example, when analyzing publications and costs of the Open Access transformation at an institution, the application of a PID for research organizations is crucial. In order to learn more about the status quo of the use and dissemination of organizational identifiers in Germany, a "Survey on the Need for and Use of Organizational Identifiers at Universities and Non-University Research Institutions in Germany" was conducted among 548 research institutions in Germany in the period from July 13, 2020 to December 4, 2020 as part of the DFG-funded ORCID DE project. This survey constitutes the largest survey on organizational identifiers in Germany to date; it counts 183 participating institutions. Among other things, the survey included questions on the knowledge, distribution, and use of organizational identifiers at research institutions. In addition, requirements for organizational identifiers and their metadata (e. g., relations and granularity) were queried. The present paper provides a comprehensive overview of the results of the survey conducted as part of the aforementioned project and contributes to the advancement and an increased awareness of organizational identifiers.
Zusammenfassung Ein Persistent Identifier (PID) für wissenschaftliche Organisationen wie Forschungseinrichtungen oder Forschungsförderorganisationen ist ein weiteres entscheidendes Puzzlestück zur Förderung der Standardisierung im wissenschaftlichen Publikationsprozess – insbesondere im Hinblick auf den bereits etablierten Digital Object Identifier (DOI) für wissenschaftliche Werke und der ORCID-ID für wissenschaftliche Autor*innen. Die Anwendung dieser PIDs ermöglicht automatisierte Datenflüsse und garantiert die dauerhafte Verknüpfung von Informationsobjekten. Darüber hinaus sind PIDs elementare Bestandteile zur Umsetzung von Open Science. So kommt z. B. der Anwendung eines PID für wissenschaftliche Organisationen bei der Analyse von Publikationen und Kosten der Open-Access-Transformation an einer Einrichtung eine zentrale Bedeutung zu. Um mehr über den Status quo der Nutzung und Verbreitung von Organisations-IDs in Deutschland zu erfahren, wurde im Rahmen des DFG-geförderten Projekts ORCID DE im Zeitraum vom 13.07.2020 bis zum 04.12.2020 eine „Umfrage zum Bedarf und Nutzung von Organisations-IDs an Hochschulen und außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen in Deutschland“ unter 548 wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen in Deutschland durchgeführt. An der bislang größten Befragung zu Organisations-IDs in Deutschland beteiligten sich 183 Einrichtungen. Bestandteil der Studie waren unter anderem Fragen zur Kenntnis, Verbreitung und Nutzung von Organisations-IDs an wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen. Darüber hinaus wurden Anforderungen an Organisations-IDs bzw. ihre Metadaten (z. B. Relationen und Granularität) erfragt. Der vorliegende Beitrag bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die Ergebnisse der im Rahmen des Projekts durchgeführten Umfrage und stellt einen Beitrag zur Förderung und zu einer gesteigerten Bekanntheit von Organisations-IDs dar.
re3data is the global registry for research data repositories. As of January 2021, the service lists over 2620 digital repositories across all scientific disciplines and provides an extensive description of repositories based on a detailed metadata schema (https://doi.org/10.2312/re3.008). A variety of funders, publishers, and scientific organizations around the world refer to re3data within their guidelines and policies, recommending the service to researchers looking for appropriate repositories for storage and discovery of research data. With over 750 entries the field of geosciences is one of the most strongly represented subject groups in the registry. The re3data COREF project (Community Driven Open Reference for Research Data Repositories) started in January 2020 and receives funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for 36 months. With its main focus on the current project the presentation will outline the further professionalization of re3data and the provision of reliable and individualizable descriptions of research data repositories. This includes updates and revisions of the metadata schema, the advancement of the technical infrastructure as well as an enhanced overall (technical) service model concept to embed and connect the service within the research data landscape as a community-driven source and reference for trustworthy repositories. In addition, outcomes from the first re3data COREF stakeholder survey and workshop held in November 2020 will be presented, introducing diverse use cases of the re3data service and examples for the reuse of its metadata. The presentation will address how re3data currently interlinks with external parties and how more advanced options for easier and trustworthy integration of third-party information can be facilitated.
