Andreu Domingo i Valls has a PhD in Sociology (1997) and a Master’s Degree in Demography (1989). He has been a researcher (starting in 1984) at the Centre for Demographic Studies (CED) and its deputy-director since 1997, as well as being an associate lecturer at the Department of Geography at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) since 2006.
A specialist in international migration and family formation, Andreu Domingo is interested in population theory and demographic thought. He is chief researcher of the Group for Demographic and Migration Studies (GEDEM- http://gedemced.uab.cat/es), which has been recognised as a consolidated research group by the Generalitat (Government) of Catalonia since 2005. GEDEM belongs to the Spanish group Network of Migration Studies (Network of Excellence), recognised by the Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (CSO2016-81986-REDT).
Since 2000 he has led 35 R&D&I projects and directed studies contracted with the administration on a range of themes related with immigration, at the local, national and international levels, as well as participating in another 20 projects. He has a large number of publications and has spoken at numerous congresses. He received the Anagrama Essay Finalist award for his book Descenso literario a los infiernos demográficos. Distopía y población (Literary Descent through Demographic Infernos: Dystopia and Population, 2008), and also the 2014 City of Barcelona Prize for the Essay in the Social Sciences and Humanities for the book Catalunya al mirall de la immigració. Demografia i identitat nacional (Catalonia in the Mirror of Immigration: Demography and National Identity). Moreover, this work received the Prat de la Riba Prize in 2017 from the Institute for Catalan Studies. He is co-editor of the CED scientific bulletin Perspectives Demogràfiques.
In March 2017 he was named president of the Association for Historical Demography (ADEH), and he is a member of the Population Europe network of demography research centres. At the local level, he is on the Advisory Board for the Barcelona City Council Neighbourhood Plan. He is a member of the world’s leading demography associations (IUSSP, EAPS, PAA, and ALAP) and also of the national professional associations (ADEH and FES). He has been a visiting scholar at the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh, and a guest lecturer at the National University of Luján (Argentina).
He has been a jury member for several prizes and an advisory board member in the area of immigration at the levels of international immigration (United Nations) and in Spain (Canary Islands Government and the Catalan Government), as well as acting as a consultant for the agency ANECA and the Spanish Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, in addition to being an assessor for several international scientific journals.
In his teaching work, he has lectured in several PhD and master’s degrees with courses on migration, notable amongst which are the PhD course of the European Doctoral School of Demography and, at present, its master’s degree. He has been a member of the advisory board of the Departamento de Economia della popolazione e dello sviluppo at the University of Bari (Italy) and is currently secretary of the Commission for the PhD in Demography at the UAB. He has supervised eight PhD theses and is presently supervising another two.
