He has broad research interests in the area of biomass conversion to fuels and chemicals and has published over 100 journal articles. Dr. Dien is currently working on development of non-Saccharomyces yeast for direct conversion of biomass sugars into oils (e.g. lipids) for use as drop in biofuels. He has worked on teams that developed microorganisms for production of fuel ethanol from sugar mixtures derived from biomass, integrated bioprocesses for conversion of biomass into sugars and their fermentation into value-added products, and bioenergy crops as a new sugar platform for cultivation on marginal farm lands. He serves as an associate editor on the board of Biotechnology for Biofuels, a co-PI for the Center of Advanced Bioenergy and Biouels Innovation (U of IL), and is on the technical board for Biochemicals from Cellulosic Biomass (BioCeB) (University of Toronto, Canada). His research includes techniques to convert biomasses to concentrated sugars, yeast characterization and development of fermentation processes, and biochemical engineering process analysis.
