He works within the research group of Prof Julie Cairney as part of the AMMD (Advanced Manufacturing of Medical Devices) ARC Research Hub - a multidisciplinary research hub incorporating universities along with a number of biomedical industry partners. The group is focussed on the optimisation of biomedical implants and production processes. Ben’s role is in the production of unique medical-grade coatings via thin film deposition for applications to heart stent wires, as well as in the complete characterisation of these materials and post treated products under electron microscopy, MicroCT, X-Ray diffraction and mechanical testing, working in partnership with other hub members.
Ben’s research interests span the full range of thin film deposition technologies, particularly for highly tailored mechanical, biomedical and electrical/energy applications such as photovoltaics. More broadly, Ben maintains a strong interest in:
• Characterisation of coating morphology and behaviours, and;
• Exploration of micro and nanoscale interactions that occur at interfaces between organic and metallic or mineral phases in composite products, biochars and porous materials, soils and plant matter.
