Costis has pioneered experimental techniques and protocols based on ultrasound scanning that are currently being used all over the world for the study of the mechanical properties of human muscles, tendons and joints in vivo. He studies how the musculoskeletal system adapts to exercise, disuse, ageing and disease and the way the body behaves in challenging daily activities, such as stair negotiation, to identify and prevent falls and accidents which are prevalent in older age. The importance of Costis' work is highlighted by a number of international prizes and honours, which include the Promising Young Scientist Award from the International Society of Biomechanics in 2003, the Pfizer Prize from the Physiological Society in 2002, and the Post-Doctoral Scientist Award from American Society of Biomechanics in 2001. Costis has been the author/co-author of more than 160 SCI papers with 9500 citations, and a H-index of 58. Costis has extensive experience of co-ordinating large scale, multi-partner projects related to musculoskeletal biomechanics, and stair fall prevention and locomotory safety in older people and associated disorders. He has a track record of collaboration with stakeholders involved in policy making, translation of research and societal impact. He has received several national and international grants on musculoskeletal biomechanics from various sources, including EU Horizon2020, New Dynamic of Ageing (NDA), Action Medical Research, Dunhill Medical Trust and Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
