Georg Zoidl is a Professor and Canada Research Chair Tier1 in Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology. Since 2011, he has been cross-appointed with the Departments of Psychology and Biology, York University, Toronto, ON, Canada. He also holds a position as an Affiliated Researcher with the Krembil Research Institute/Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto, since 2015. His areas of research expertise are molecular and cellular neurobiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and functional genomics. The major line of his work concerns the roles of electrical and ephaptic communication at mixed electrochemical synapses in the retina and brain. This is a field in neuroscience in which understanding of electrical and ephaptic communication has been transformed from notions of primitive forms of neurotransmission to current views regarding them as sophisticated structures that play crucial roles in neuronal circuits and network activity. Electrical and ephaptic communication confer neuronal activity, which enables synchronous oscillations driving a wide range of information processing related to vision, memory formation, motor control, attention, and plasticity. This field’s emergence has spawned many questions about the neurobiology of electrical and ephaptic communication, which are addressed in a “Genes to Behavior” strategy using cell culture and gene-edited zebrafish models generated at York University.
