After completing my BSc. Hons in Medical Microbiology (University of Edinburgh - 1998), I moved home to The University of Liverpool on a MAFF funded CASE studentship investigating shigatoxigenic bacteriophages of E. coli. This work engineered labelled constructs to demonstrate the broad host range of these lysogenic phages (AEM, 2001) and their capacity to super-infect lysogen hosts (Infect. Immun. 2003). I was also involved in the identification of the receptor used for phage infection (J. Bac. 2007) and an assessment of phage survival in compost and soil (FEMS. Lett. Microbiol. 2005).
I then moved to University of Florida, USA as an NIH-funed postdoctoral researcher to investigate the pathophysiology of Porphyromonas gingivalis in periodontal disease. This work characterised differential quorum sensing control of iron acquisition mechanisms (Infect. Immun. 2006) and identified key mediators of inter-species interactions (Mol Microbiol. 2007).
Following the birth of my daughter I moved slightly closer to home - Universite Aix-Marseille, France to take up a Marie-Curie RTN position investigating the transport of Beta-lactam antibiotics across the Gram-negative bacterial membrane. This work showed the effects of key porin mutations in slowing the influx of antibiotics (PloSOne, 2009; J Med Microbiol, 2018) and revealed early-response regulation of porins under stress conditions (AAC, 2007).
After the birth of my son, I returned to Liverpool and briefly changed focus to work on an MRC-funded project investigating the effect of polymorphisms in human SLCO transporters on pharmacokinetics of antiretroviral therapy (Pharmacogenetics and Genomics, 2010).
Next, I took up a position at the Institute of Infection and Global Health, University of Liverpool, as a named applicant on a Wellcome Trust-funded project that returned me to my first love - bacteriophages. This time characterising the infection properties of cohabiting prophages of the Liverpool Epidemic Strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and their influence on infections of the cystic fibrosis lung (BMC Micro, 2012). This work showed the abundance and activity of LES phages in the CF lung (ISME, 2015) and how they can drive adaptation (PNAS, 2016; ISME, 2016) and competition (ISME, 2015, Evol app, 2014) during infection.
I was appointed as lecturer in medical microbiology at The University of Salford in 2012 and promoted to senior lecturer in 2017. My 1st PhD student completed her studentship investigating microbial communities of broiler farm water systems 2017. I currently supervise / co-supervise 4 PhD studentships: PhD 2014-2018: Characterising antimicrobial activity of polyunsaturated fatty acids on bacteria from chronic wound infections. (International Government Funded Studentship); PhD 2016-2020: Investigating the Gram-positive bacterial and environmental causes of maternal sepsis in Uganda and their antibiotic-resistance profiles (Knowledge for Change Co-funded Studentship); PhD 2017-2021: Investigating the Gram-negative bacterial causes of maternal sepsis in Uganda and their antibiotic-resistance profiles (Self-funded Studentship); PhD 2016-2020: Experimental evolution of the tsetse fly endosymbiont S. glossinidius (UoS P to Excellence Studentship).
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy PR067355 (2014) and Programme co-ordinator for MSc in Science Communication and Future Media.
