The research activities are focused on the development of methods for grapevine selection (as well as for other arboreal perennial species for vegetable propagation) based on quantitative genetics principles and focusing on the exploitation of genetic variability within old varieties. Other works with sexually propagated species are also conducted, such as stone pine, maritime pine, and cork oak. Those methods include: experimental designs adequate for large initial field trials; mixed models for data analysis to estimate variance components and other quantitative genetic parameters and to obtain the best linear unbiased predictors of genotypic effects and genetic gains; evaluation of genotype by environment interaction. The research activity comprises a wide range of collaborations with Portuguese Institutions and involves the participation in methodological management of the Portuguese Network for Grapevine Selection and the Portuguese Association for Grapevine Diversity.
Participation in the selection of polyclonal materials of 50 ancient Portuguese varieties. Participation in the scientific coordination and elaboration of the homologation files for the official agreement of 150 clones from 24 ancient grapevine varieties.
Member of the Research Centre Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food (LEAF), Instituto Superior de Agronomia, University of Lisbon (ISA-UL).
Member of the Directive Board of the Portuguese Association for Grapevine Diversity (PORVID).
Member of the GENET expert group (International Organisation of Vine and Wine-OIV Portuguese commission).
President of GENET (Genetic Resources and Vine Selection) Group of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).
