Fernando Guiomar was born in Aveiro, Portugal, in 1986. He received the M.Sc. degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering in December of 2009, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in September 2015, both from University of Aveiro, Portugal. During his PhD studies, he has developed advanced high-performance and low-complexity digital filters to compensate for nonlinear impairments in coherent optical transmission systems. He has contributed as a member of the principal team or as a collaborator in several national and international research projects.
In October 2015, he has joined the OptCom group of Politecnico di Torino (in collaboration CISCO Photonics Italy srl), as a post-doctoral researcher under the framework of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSC) Individual Fellowship (2-years fellowship), where he worked on the development of flexible modulation and digital signal processing subsystems for elastic optical networks. As part of the secondment stage of his MSC fellowship, he worked for 5 months as a contractor for CISCO Optical GmbH, Nuremberg, Germany, where he developed simulative and laboratorial studies on the impact of laser impairments on the performance of high-speed coherent optical transceivers.
In November 2017, Fernando Guiomar has re-joined Instituto de Telecomunicações - Aveiro as a senior researcher responsible for the national project ORCIP (Optical Radio Convergence Infrastructure for Communications and Power Delivering), in which he is currently working towards the development of an open testbed (to be deployed in the campus of University of Aveiro) for the testing and prototyping of future 5G solutions involving novel optical and radio technologies.
Fernando Guiomar is a member of OSA and IEEE, and he has been frequently serving as a reviewer for high-impact journals in the area of optical communications. He has co-authored more than 100 scientific publications in leading international journals and conferences, including several invited and review papers. He is also the co-author of patent applications on the areas of linear and nonlinear equalization of optical fiber impairments. In 2016, he has received the Photonics21 Student Innovation Award, distinguishing industrial-oriented research with high impact in Europe.
