Ignacio Vega-Naredo, senior author of the work, notes that "as we age our cells are oxidizing and accumulating garbage and errors that prevent them from performing their normal functions. In this work, we have seen how stem cells possess antioxidant and recycling systems of more powerful components that allow them to withstand stressful situations more efficiently." However, as Paulo Oliveira and Vega-Naredo himself indicate, "as we age, stem cell reservoirs also run out and they lose their ability to generate differentiated cells correctly. If we were to understand how stem cells maintain their quality, we could preserve their tissue regeneration function for longer. We wanted to try to perceive how the transmission of damage to the next generation of cells could be minimized."
