I did my undergraduate and diploma studies in Molecular Biotechnology Engineering at the University of Chile, which allowed me to get the necessary knowledge in the fields of biochemistry, biotechnology and molecular biology. Throughout my academic career, I have studied, via Molecular Dynamics simulations, diverse topics ranging from nanomaterials to biological macromolecules. During my PhD, I was involved on the effects of electric fields on nano biosystems. Afterwards, my post-doctoral research converged towards the exciting topic of free-energy calculations in biomolecular simulations, focusing on applications and method development.
In my PhD period, I was involved in the simulation of the effects of electric fields on nano-biosystems through molecular dynamics. In particular the repercussions on the transport properties of nanochannels, such as carbon nanotubes or aquaporins. It was found that electric fields can be employed to regulate the flux of very narrow carbon-nanotubes.
My first post-doctoral research converged towards free-energy calculations in biomolecular simulations, focusing on applications and method development. The former involved the study of the recognition of Lipid A by the proteins MD-2 and TLR4; while the latter involved the development of a novel free-energy method tailored at systems that present different conformational ensembles. Lately, I have develop my own research line; I am currently working on the thermodynamics of carbon nanotube assisted partitioning of small molecules.
Furthermore, I am currently working on additional projects involved with MD simulation of biomolecular systems: the simulation of connexins and Gap Junction Channels under the influence of potential differences including the generation of simplified systems that roughly emulate these complex structures; the implementation of the molecular dipole as a new reaction coordinate for umbrella sampling simulations. the folding thermodynamics of knotted-proteins via steered molecular dynamics simulations and chemical denaturation. Finally I have been working in the field of nanotoxicity, in particular the study of proteins adsorbed onto carbon derived nanoparticles.
