Career Trajectory
Bio
Lourdes Salamanca-Riba received the B.S. degree in physics from the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Mexico City, in 1978 and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the Massacusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1985.
She joined the Physics Department of the GM Research Laboratory in 1985, where she started investigating the structure of PbTe-based semiconductor heterostructures. In 1987, she joined the Materials Program of the University of Maryland as an Assistant Professor and started a study on ordering, phase decomposition, and strain relaxation in semiconductor heterostructures using transmission electron microscopy. In August 1992, she became an Associate Professor, and in August 2000, a Professor. Her areas of expertise are effects of strain in the formation of ordered structures and the initial process of self assembly in semiconductor nanostructures. She is presently investigating the effect of growth parameters on the structure and properties of ferroelectric/ferromagnetic oxide nanostructures, and attachment of DNA to GaAs.
