个人简介
I started my research at the Endocrinology & Metabolism Research Centre of Tehran University after I received my clinical MD degree. My research at that time was focused on the epidemiology of osteoporosis and fracture risk in Iran. I also actively worked in the topic of evidence-based medicine by publishing books (in Persian) and organising courses and workshops for Iranian clinicians and medical students. I also worked remotely with the Manitoba Bone Density Program, which is a large provincial registry of bone densitometry and fracture outcomes in Canada.
In 2006, I started my studies at the University of Cambridge for a Master and PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health. My research topic was on the epidemiology of osteoporosis and fracture risk in EPIC-Norfolk cohort study. After finishing my PhD, I started work as a Research Associate at the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology, King's College London. I was responsible for the HATS project (Healthy Ageing Twin Study), which aimed to look into genetic and environmental components of ageing trends in various health domains. My work was originally concentrated on longitudinal analysis in a twin-based study setting. I also worked on a large metabolomic study of serum samples in twins to find the metabolic pathways to obesity and biomarkers of ageing-related disorders and cardiovascular diseases. I specifically used Mendelian randomisation technique to find causal associations between serum metabolites and obesity- and ageing-related phenotypes. I also collaborated with several genome-wide association studies (GEFOS and GIANT consortia), a next-generation sequencing study (UK10K), and a multiple-tissue gene expression study (MuTHER).
In 2013, I joined a large multi-disciplinary collaborative project at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of Imperial College London. This project aims to discover novel metabolic biomarkers of subclinical atherosclerosis using state-of-the-art metabolomic technologies and detailed clinical phenotyping in 8000 participants from three cohorts. Besides the large database management and all the bioinformatics works, I have been exposed to various new epidemiological and biostatistical concepts during this project. I also worked on the exome- and genome-wide association studies in a large national cohort of >40,000 UK police officers and collaborated with several international consortia.
In 2014, I joined the Institute of Health Informatics, University College London (UCL), and the Farr Institute of Health Informatics, London. My main research is on the effects of serum lipid levels on prognosis and risk prediction of various cardiovascular outcomes and ageing-related disorders. I will use large-scale Electronic Health Records (EHR) data from the CALIBER platform (https://www.caliberresearch.org/) in the Farr Institute, as well as other large consented cohorts (such as UK Biobank) and new emerging sources of omics/imaging/clinical data. I am also a member of the PROGRESS Partnership group (http://www.progress-partnership.org/), which is developing a framework for strategic and methodological aspects of prognosis research. We will try to make the field of "Prognosis Research" as a recognised field of inquiry important in translational research and intrinsic to the practice of clinical medicine and development of healthcare policy.
