个人简介
I finished my PhD in Chemistry, in 2013, approved unanimously with Distinction and Honours, at the University of Coimbra. In the work developed for the PhD thesis, the quantitative evaluation of chlorpromazine interaction with lipid bilayers was assessed using ITC. A new methodology was developed that allowed the use of ITC to quantitatively characterize the kinetics of translocation across lipid bilayers. My PhD work was published in Journal of American Chemical Society, in a book chapter and was awarded the Young Biophysicist Award by the Portuguese Biophysical Society in 2014.
In 2015, I have joined King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Saudi Arabia) as a postdoctoral fellow. My main project was related with the early events in Alzheimer’s disease, using rHDL-based nanoparticles as drug delivery agents targeting amyloid beta peptide aggregation. This project was published in Chemical Communications journal. Also, I have participated in parallel projects resulting in the co-authorship of other publications. This postdoctoral position allowed me to develop my knowledge in the fields of materials engineering and smart drug delivery.
Early 2018 I returned to Portugal and re-joined Biological Chemistry Group at Coimbra Chemistry Centre. I have been contributing with fundamental data for the build-up of a mechanistic model that considers all the relevant steps to calculate the overall permeability through the BBB. I have presented part of this work at International Workshop on Biological Membranes (Helsinki, Finland) and recently a paper has been submitted for publication in a peer reviewed journal. I have also participated in the 3rd European MicroCal User Meeting (London, UK) covering broad applications, best practices, advanced data analysis and latest developments in ITC and DSC. I have also been involved in two collaborations, namely with CNC and LaserLeap at CQC, studying the effect of Exofect® on the membrane of exosomes and of photoacoustic waves on the permeability through lipidic giant unilamelar vesicles from a biophysical point of view.
During the 5 years focused, I was actively involved in tutoring students, supervising their experimental work and providing theoretical support during their research. Last year I’ve been part of the organizing committee of two workshops and was invited to the scientific committee of a national encounter. I was also involved in the management of the laboratory and in contact with procurement services for the management of funds and their rational use.
Biologically relevant physicochemical phenomena have been the broad topic of my career with relevance on drug delivery and the permeation of biological membranes.
