Dr. Pilar Borja was born in Zaragoza (Spain) where she completed her studies in Chemistry.
During the last year of her B. Sc. she performed the Final Degree Project in the research group of prof. J. Garín in the Organic Chemistry department of the University of Zaragoza (UZ) under the supervision of Dr. S. Franco. Her research project was focused in the synthesis of new push-pull systems with second order nonlinear optical properties. This experience provided her new synthetic skills in organic chemistry and experience in different characterization techniques such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (HRMS), cyclic voltammetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic Generation (EFISH). The results obtained were published in the journal RSC Advances.
In 2009, Dr. Borja was awarded with a F. P. I. pre-doctoral grant from the Spanish Government to develop her PhD in the research group of prof. J. Forniés (Chemistry of the platinum group elements; http://platinum.unizar.es/) at the Inorganic Chemistry department of the UZ. During the first year of the fellowship, she studied the Academic Master in Chemical Research of the UZ under the supervision of Drs. V. Sicilia and J. M. Casas. Dr. Borja quickly adapted to the new chemistry and all the new required techniques. A proof of the fast and effective adaptation of Dr. Borja was the rapid publication of her Master’s research in the journal Dalton Transactions.
Dr. Borja obtained her Master Degree in 2010 and the PhD Degree titled ‘New Pt(II) phosphorescent complexes: Synthesis, properties and potential applications’ in 2014 obtaining the highest qualification with Cum Laude distinction. During that period at Fornies’ group, she acquired broad experience in NMR, EPR and synthetic skills in organometallic chemistry (including the manipulation of moisture-, light- and air-sensitive compounds). In addition, she gained large experience in photophysical studies including UV, DRUV, Steady-state, emission life-time measurements using phosphorimeter, nanosecond flashlamp or nanoLED accessories.
The main goal of her Master and PhD Thesis projects was the synthesis of new luminiscent cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes using benzo[h]quinolinate as C,N-cyclometalated ligand, the study of their photophysical properties and their oxidation to reach Pt(III) complexes. Dr. Borja managed to develop different research lines in the group:
i) the development of new luminescent Pt(II) complexes for their use as phosphorescent dopants in OLEDs;
ii) the use of Pt(II) complexes as sensors of heavy metals such as mercury; and
iii) the study of photochemical reactions, specifically photooxidation of half-lantern Pt(II) dinuclear complexes to Pt(III) with halocarbons.
Her work at Fornies’ group led to 8 publications in the most representative journals in the field. Remarkably, Dr Borja developed interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with Physicists from the Institut de Reserca en Energia de Catalunya (IREC, Barcelona, Spain), this work crystallizing in the publication of an article in the journal ACS Appl. Mater.
After her thesis defense, she continued her research in Pt(II) complexes as a postdoctoral researcher in the group until the end of 2015. In April 2016, she joined the team Systèmes de Hautes Energies (SHEN group) lead by Dr, Nicolas Mézailles in the Laboratoire Hétérochimie Fondamentale et Appliquée (LHFA, UMR 5069 CNRS) from the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse for almost one year. During this time, she worked in two main topics,
i) C-F bond functionalization mediated by the 14-electrons platform [(L2)Ni(0)], studying their reaction mechanisms as well as their use in catalysis; and
ii) Fluorine chemistry. Fluorination and trifluoromethylation of aromatics using high-valent Ni complexes.
Dr. Borja was awarded with a postdoctoral fellowship of the University Jaume I in Castellón de la Plana (Spain). In March 2017 she joined the "Química Organometálica y Catálisis Homogénea" (QOMCAT) group
