Kamath Sandip D

Dr. Sandip Kamath is a Senior Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. He recently received a Lise Meitner Fellowship from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) to investigate the role of Advanced Glycation End products on the initiation of Shrimp allergy. Previously, he has worked at the Molecular Allergy Research Laboratory with prof. Andreas Lopata at the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM) based at James Cook University, Townsville. He is also a part of the Centre for Food and Allergy Research (CFAR) based at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne. Dr Kamath's research focuses on the characterisation of allergenic proteins from different food and inhalant sources, and their interaction with the human immune system through various cellular and humoral responses. His research implements proteomic and molecular cloning techniques to elucidate specific antigenic regions of allergenic proteins, with an aim to design and generate hypoallergenic constructs for potential therapeutic applications. He has also explored the potential of natural source-derived compounds as novel therapeutics in mouse models of food allergy. His broader research interests include developing novel in vitro diagnostics for allergic diseases, investigating the role of Class 3 food allergens in occupational allergy, and understanding the role of gut microbiome in food allergy. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, reviews and book chapters generating over 2200 citations in the field of molecular allergology, clinical immunology, and food science & technology. Dr Kamath actively participates in engaging the public to create awareness about food allergies through science talks, news and radio interviews, and using platforms such as TedX talk. He is the Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Immunology, Vaccines and Molecular Therapeutics and a member of the Public Outreach Taskforce for the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI).
