In research and development, I have garnered USD 10 million in research project grants from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia from 2002-2008 and USD 3 million from the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia from 2013-2018 for research in zero emission hydrogen energy and fuel cells technologies.
I am working on nano structured electrodes and polymer-inorganic nanocomposite proton exchange membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) and microbial fuel cells (MFC); intermediate and low T solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and design and prototyping of PEMFC, DMFC and MFC stacks. I also work on hydrogen production using transition metal oxide catalysts for steam reforming and dye sensitized photoanodes in photoelectrochemical cells (PEC); and biohydrogen production from anaerobic dark fermentation of wastewater, microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) and biological photovoltaic cells (BPVC). I have worked on drying kinetics of gelatinized starch, oil palm nuts, cocoa beans, padi, oil palm empty fruit bunches, oil palm frond fibres, fruits and other agricultural products and processed food. I also have worked on engineering of drum dryers, spray dryers, fluidized bed dryers and solar dryers.
