Career Trajectory
Bio
My research skills principally concern the themes of conservation biology, biotic interactions, population dynamics and biological invasions on islands. My previous researches (postgraduate and doctoral researches) were devoted to study the impact of invasive predators (Felis silvestris catus, Rattus sp., Mus musculus) on endangered terrestrial and marine island birds. I combined field (capture-mark-recapture, radiotracking, behavioral experiments, control of predator populations, abundance/density monitoring, survey of shearwater breeding success) and lab analysis (morphological and molecular diet analysis) in a multidisciplinary approach to better identify the mechanisms of impact of these predators on bird populations, quantify their impact and propose relevant conservation strategies.
Particularly, during my PhD, I studied the trophic relationships (predation and competition for food resources) between three invasive predators (F. s. catus, Rattus rattus, R. exulans) and a critically endangered bird species, the Tuamotu kingfisher Todiramphus gambieri endemic from Niau Atoll (French Polynesia), by combining morphological and molecular methods of diet analysis. I developed a DNA barcoding protocol to specifically detect and identify bird DNA in predator diet using bird-specific primer pairs (targeting mitochondrial Cox1 gene).
My current postdoc (Université Rennes 1, France) deals with the conservation of the Lesser Horseshoe Bat Rhinolophus hipposideros in managed forests in the Northern limit of its range. I use a non invasive method of molecular capture-mark-recapture (based on DNA microsatellites), coupled with GIS and modeling analyses, to estimate bat demographic parameters, to model their population dynamics, and to identify the environmental variables (habitat quality, forest management, population connectivity) that will enhance the management and long term survival of this species in a context of climate change.
In addition, over the last 6 years, I was in charge of teaching general ecology, conservation biology, molecular ecology and GIS (spatial analyses) to undergraduate and master students at both the University of Aix-Marseille and Rennes 1, France. I am also experienced in mentoring and training undergraduate, graduate and PhD students.
