Dr. Zhao has been engaged in the teaching and research work on engineering rock monitoring and stability assessment, numerical analysis for geotechnical engineering, and geological disasters. I chaired or participated in nearly 20 research projects, which included projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (No. 51064010, 51364012, 51364011 ), sub-projects of the National Science & Technology Pillar Program during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan Period of China (No. 2008BAB32B03), provincial and ministerial level research projects, and more than 10 projects commissioned by mining enterprises. One of the research projects was identified as “The international advanced level” by China Nonferrous Metal Industry Association, and won the second prize of the China nonferrous metals industry science and technology award. I have published more than 30 academic papers, and filed 2 invention model patent applications.
In judging stability of the underground overburden strata over goaf, I defined the safety coefficient based on the stability of the covering rock, and bring an innovative way of deciding the critical rock breakage point using the strength reduction method, and realized a quantitative assessment for the rock roof stability of the mined area (currently applying for patent right). I carried out series research on crack characteristics of overburden strata material over metal mine goaf, from the meso-crack to macroscopic instability destruction , and have obtained certain research results ( 4 invention model patent applications filed, 1 PhD paper completed, recently more than 20 papers in academic journals published, second prize of the science and technology award for once.
