OBJECTIVES. To study the relation between the release of vasoactive neuropeptides and hemodynamic changes in sepsis and septic shock. DESIGN. A controlled open prospective study. SUBJECTS. 20 patients admitted in our Intensive Care Unit with standard supportive therapy, and 20 healthy volunteers. METHODS. Blood samples were taken at onset and every 12 hours on the following day after hospital admission to measure plasma concentrations of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY) and substance P (SP). All the patients were monitorized with a pulmonary artery catheter. RESULTS and STATISTICAL ANALYSIS.
