Study on the application of double wire submerged arc welding in the construction of crude oil storage tank

At present, double wire submerged arc welding (TW-SAW) was far from widely used in the construction of crude oil storage tank except for a few applications in the bottom panels and fillet weld of oil tanks. As for the girth weld of wall panels of large oil tanks, however, there was no report of the application of TW-SAW. In order to construct crude oil storage tank more efficiently, in the paper, two types of steel plates including both domestic and abroad were selected and TW-SAW was used to weld the transverse joint of them. Also, the structure properties of welding joint in those steel plates were analyzed to assess the feasibility of TW-SAW. The test results showed that favorable structure and mechanical property were obtained in both types of steel plates by virtue of TW-SAW and therefore the application of TW-SAW and the development of its related equipments were meaningful and feasible.
