Beam energy boosting for experiments at ISOLDE using a high-voltage platform

For experiments requiring moderately energetic radioactive ion beams a high-voltage platform has been constructed at ISOLDE/CERN. The use of a 7 kVA motor-generator allows running even a complex experiment through an Ethernet connection at high voltage, The present limit is 260 kV, but minor improvements to some components should allow acceleration voltages of at least -400 kV. In addition to the present uses of the facility in nuclear physics projects, several novel applications in solid state physics are envisaged, e.g. diffusion studies or DLTS.
