Diagnostic And Therapeutic Observations On Chronic Urticaria

The authors studied gastric function, the radiological appearance of the stomach and the duodenum, the serum level of pepsinogen, and blood fibrinolysis in a large number of patients suffering from chronic urticaria ; they made a systematic study of the focuses and of the allergens that could be responsible. The results showed normal blood fibrinolysis, a very low percentage of demonstrable allergic sensitivity, a high serum level of pepsinogen, and frequent gastro-duodenal disorders. The results seem to support the hypothesis concerning the importance of a deficiency of the gastrointestinal barrier in the pathogenesis of urticaria, a finding that indicates treatment of this disorder by methods other than the traditional types of therapy.
