Survey of the prevalence of metabolic syndrome by different diagnostic criteria in individual over 30 years of age in East Fengxian District of Shanghai

Objective To compare the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in individual over 30 years of age in East Fengxian District of Shanghai by different definitions and find the appropriate. Methods A cross-secitional survey with random sampling was performed including 2 107 individuals in East Fengxian community over 30 years of age. The different prevalences under the World Health Organization(WHO)in 1999,the China Diabetes Society(CDS) in 2004 and International Diabetes Federation(IDF) in 2005 definitions respectively were calculated and the results were compared by κ test. Results The prevalences of metabolic syndrome under WHO,CDS,and IDF were 10.20%,16.66% and 27.20%,respectively. The 91.69% concordance of metabolic syndrome cases was found between WHO and CDS,81.78% between CDS and IDF,and 77.60% between WHO and IDF. Conclusions The prevalence of metabolic syndrome has been in a high level in individual over 30 years of age in East Fengxian District of Shanghai. The agreement among three definitions is relatively high.
