•Internal oxide and nitride formation in Fe–Al alloys is studied.•Steel slab reheating conditions.•Corrosion depth and formed phases determined using SEM/EDX and XRD.•Numerical simulation of the phase distribution is calculated.•Sub-surface oxide bands were found in several samples.
