The Effect of the Intake Port Shape on the Engine Performance in a Formula SAE Car

Formula SAE is a car competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers. This competition aim at acquire practical knowledge for students by managing a virtual company. Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan came to be held from 2003. In this study, we investigated the influence of intake port shape on engine performance with air restrictor. We tested it about quantity, speed and tumble flow of air of two new inlet ports with a flowbench. The experimental result revealed that, in the engine with air restrictor, intake flow quantity does not fall even if reduced inlet port sectional area. In addition, this can do various specifications changes (quantity, speed and tumble flow of air) by decrease part and the port shape of the inlet port. There was the best balance for the engine performance gain.
