Placental abruption describes a placenta that prematurely detaches from the uterine implantation site before the fetus is delivered. Placental abruptions range from small, insignificant detachments, to complete separations involving the whole placenta. Large placental abruptions in otherwise normal placentas are associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality.
