The potential has a logarithmic divergence at the wire, so we specify the charge per unit length on the wire rather than its potential. Then, the presence of (nonsingular) surfaces at a speci炉ed potential permits a simple series expansion at points not on the wire. A physical device with this geometry will have a wire of nonzero radius r0.Sum the series for points near the wire to show that potential of the wire is approximately 2q ln(b=2?r0).
