orintranasally with12strains coveringcapsular serotypes 1to6,7F,8,and18C. Following challenge, thesurvival rateand/or thetimeofdeathofnonsurvivors (survival time) was significantly greater thanthatofsham-immunized miceforallnineserotypes. However, differences inthedegree of protection werenotedbetween different strains. Therouteofchallenge alsoappeared toinfluence thedegree ofprotection. Nevertheless, thesignificant, albeit in some casespartial, protection provided against allnine pneumococcal serotypes supports theconclusion thatpneumolysin toxoids warrant consideration forinclusion ina humanvaccine.
