Dynamics of the carbon storage of terrestrial ecosystems in geological spatial and temporal scales

The spatial and temporal dynamics of the carbon storage of the paleobiomes in eight geological periods (early Carboniferous, late Carboniferous, middle Permian, early Jurassic, late Cretaceous, Eocene, Oligocene and Miocene) were analyzed in this study, based on the area and the estimated unit carbon density of the paleobiomes. The results showed that the change rates of the carbon densities of vegetation and soil of temperate biomes, tropical ever wet biomes and winter wet biomes were obviously higher than other biomes in the geological periods. The variation trends of the carbon storage of vegetation, soil and ecosystems in the geological time were decreased from the beginning at the early Carboniferous, then increased, and decreased again to the end. The carbon storage of vegetation, soil and ecosystems was the largest in the Eocene, Oligocene, and Eocene, respectively. And they were the least in the middle Permian, late Carboniferous, and late Carboniferous respectively.
