•The feline oral microbiome has been examined using molecular and cultivation methods.•A curated provisional taxonomic scheme is presented for unnamed feline oral bacteria.•Two hundred and forty six full length 16S rRNA reference sequence are presented for 171 feline oral taxa.•Future next generation sequencing studies can anchor reads to a curated taxonomy.
