•We evaluated the association between liver enzymes and stroke risk in a cohort study.•Our data provide further evidence for a link between GGT and stroke risk.•Higher ALT levels were related to an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke.•Higher ALT levels were related to a decreased risk of ischemic stroke.•The different relationships between ALT and subtypes of stroke need clarification.
