•Farming type significantly influenced the potato yield.•No clear link was found between farming type and dry matter or starch content.•The spread of Phytophthora infestans was faster in organically grown potatoes.•The farming type had no significant impact on the sensory properties of the potato.•The farming type had no significant impact on the phenolic acids content.
