Effect of joint mechanism on vehicle redirectional capability of water-filled road safety barrier systems.

•New impact rig is used as a surrogate to analyse barrier crashworthiness.•High-speed video photography captured meaningful output of PWFB response.•Revolute joint can be used to numerically model the joints in PWFB.•PWFB with appropriate rotational stiffness can redirect vehicles at high speed.•Joint stiffness must be 3000kNm/rad to allow successful redirection of vehicle.
