•Detecting HRSV within 60min by visualized results.•Different primer regions in group A and B based on virus genome analysis.•The assay achieves a detection limit lower than virus titer in clinical samples.•Using orthogonal experiment to optimize reaction conditions.•We report a RT-LAMP assay for HRSV diagnosis with comparable positive rate to RT-PCR.
