•Migration, invasion and apoptosis of SGC7901 were inhibited by sorafenib.•Sorafenib treatment decreased phosphorylation activation of ERK protein.•Sorafenib increased pro-apoptosis protein expression.•ERK signals in SGC7901 are one of the mechanisms of sorafenib inhibiting gastric cancer.
