•Rgs9 knockout delays maximal tactile allodynia in models of neuropathic pain.•Rgs9 knockout delays the development of maximal thermal hyperalgesia.•RGS9-2 plays a role in neuropathic pain induced anxiety and depression.•Nerve injury decreases Rgs9-2 levels in the spinal cord.•Rgs9-2 levels in the nucleus accumbens are reduced at 30days after nerve injury.
