Investigations into the genotoxic potential of olive extracts.

•Olive extracts can induce micronuclei in vitro at high cytotoxicity.•Most olive extracts, including the new H40, are negative in robust Ames tests.•Micronuclei were induced in a 90-day rat study, but results are questionable.•Olive extracts did not induce micronuclei in high dose acute or 4 week studies.•Thus the tested olive extracts, including H40, pose a negligible risk for humans.
