•Characterization of 0–10mm size fraction of the nonferrous stream is presented.•Wet shaking table was used to separate copper and aluminum.•Response surface methodology was used to optimize the separation.•The optimal levels of three operating parameters were assessed.•A concentrate product was obtained with 77.8% of Cu recovery and 1.5% of Al recovery.
