"It is just another test they want to do": Patient and caregiver understanding of the colonoscopy procedure.

•We investigate understanding of the colonoscopy among patients and caregivers prior to procedure.•Confusion around the purpose, anatomy, and logistics of colonoscopy were salient.•Age, race, income, education, and health literacy were associated with understanding.•Implications for informed consent, bowel and emotional preparation are discussed.
