•Solutions to energy equation in terms of Kummer’s function are not correct.•Homotopy analysis method is applied to viscoelastic boundary layer flow, heat transfer.•Graphical and tabular demonstration of convergence of the HAM solutions is provided.•Effects of parameters on skin friction coefficient and wall heat transfer are tabulated.•Homotopy perturbation method does not yield convergent solutions.
