•Lithium and bromide transport in soil columns and saturated condition were studied.•Pore networks in soil under alfalfa resulted in accelerated solute transport.•The breakthrough sequence justified the macropore flow in the treatments.•The strength of preferential flow can be measured by the relative 5% arrival time.
